I'm considering selling the NES I got last summer because half the time the game doesnt work and almost the other half of the time the system doesnt work. How did anyone have fun with this piece of junk?

When it was the only video game system you had access to, it was the most magical toy in existence.

We put up with blowing into the carts and every slight movement locking up the game and all the other jank because the alternative (in terms of gaming) was nothing.

The Amiga was awesome though.

The console is over 30 years old by now. Of course it's not going to work properly anymore.

it was always really fun playing it with the graphics all screwed up from the cart being misread. like mario would just turn into two vertical lines.

It should also be noted a lot or even most of the issues with the system are to do with the NES design to appeal to Americans and arent present with the Famicom.

Or mega man would shoot out other mega mans instead of bullets and on the stage select screen, boss names are missing letters like "IND MAN"

I remember doing this a lot lol. Why was this needed again? I remember thinking dust is what messed the games up.

Just mod the system with a blinking light win.

Or put a new 72 pin connector. Don't forget to clean the contacts of your games with alcohol and a cuetip. That works wonders.

My NES gets more play time than any of my other systems right now. (I'm trying to get through Gauntlet). There is probably over 200 games that are worth playing and hold up to a modern audience.

NES isn't a terribly well-designed system, no. It's the horizontal cart loader that fucks it over. The Famicom had the good sense to use a vertical slot, but iirc the controllers were hardwired to the system and like, two feet long lol.

Of course, the system is also 40 years old. No hardware is gonna last forever.

If you're serious about playing NES games off the cart rather than...other means...I'd recommend looking into a Retron or some other similar system. They play original NES carts and are a lot more reliable. Just do a bit of research, as the emulation on some of them is a bit wonky.

I'm also thinking of selling it because the used game store I go to (unlike Gamestop) actually gives a decent price for my stuff especially consoles. I could be looking at at least $200 for the console and games together (I have about 10 or 11 games.)

It was a great system, if you knew how to maintain the parts. Emulators don't even compare to the original hardware. If you learn how to "boil the pins" then it'll work a good 90 percent of the time. And for gods sake don't blow on the games, use base 90 percent Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the connector pins on the games. A little bit on a Q-Tip works wonders.

Let it alcohol dry out which takes maybe 10 minutes most, and your games will work incredibly.

Honestly I cant go back and enjoy most NES games. The SNES is when they really got good. FYI I have no nostalgia for these systems either; I had a Sega Genesis as a kid and my first Nintendo home console was a Gamecube.

No, they don't. I have a buddy who specifically speed runs Mike Tysons Punch Out. It is much harder to do on an emulation machine as there are queues that don't line up that line up on original hardware.

Don't get me wrong, emulation is great, I'm a big fan of it. But it isn't a 1 to 1 copy of the original equipment. So timing based games have issues. Megaman X1 has very noticeable frame rate issues on certain levels compared to the original cartridge. Armored Armadillo slows to a near crawl at the end with the birds.
