I have a bachelors and I dont not believe in ghosts, with the exception of when I wake up from a nightmare in the middle of the night, at which point I believe very firmly in ghosts for approximately ten to fifteen minutes due to my brain still being in a hypnopompic state where I cannot distinguish between dreams and reality.

I'd say the fact that 32% of respondents with graduate degrees still believe in ghosts makes it less 'embarrassing' for the average person to do so. It's a belief thing; nobody can objectively prove that ghosts don't exist, because that's just kind of how proof works.

Provided it's a sincere belief, yes. Your example is clearly intended to be silly, but there are plenty of people who sincerely believe in similar notions that are not 100% impossible.

I don't think ghosts exist, personally, but I don't want to write off the possibility, either.

I think his point is that "you can't prove they don't exist" is a silly argument to make for believing that they do. You could say that about literally anything

I'm aware of that. Hence my original post.

My point is that it's easy to say "ghosts don't exist," but it's impossible to prove it. Meanwhile, people make claims of hauntings and supernatural encounters that sound ridiculous but can't be disproven. While it's fair enough to write those testimonials off as being nonsense, the truth is that you don't know for sure whether it's true or not.

You can assume, yes. You can infer. You can even investigate. I guess what I'm really saying is that it's a very steep uphill battle for skeptics, because the only way to combat fake ghost stories is to disprove them on an individual basis, whereas the paranormal enthusiasts will just keep making new claims that take a lot more effort to disprove than the initial claim took to make.

I can't definitively prove Qanon is wrong about high level democrats having sex with and eating babies. But I can pretty confidently say that's a crazy claim with no basis to it. And human testimonial is probably the most unreliable thing to consider as proof of something. Even if they aren't just straight up lying, people misconstrue and misrember how things actually happened all the time.

Like I said, you could approach almost anything with this agnostic mentality of belief. At the end of the day it makes more rational sense to not believe something exists until there's a rational reason to believe it does.

Sure, but there's a reason religion is referred to as "faith". They don't really think Christ's blood is in their merlot, etc (Well, except the nuttiest portion). It's just a set of beliefs people use to reconcile their own mortality.

Ghost hunter types think there's actual evidence of the supernatural, and said evidence is usually things that are easily explained.

Like, nobody knows what created the universe. The question...isn't even comprehensible, really, it doesn't mesh with science as we know it. It's one thing to say that maybe some higher being is responsible, and he's in a different plane of existence beyond our comprehension. It's another to say that the dude is hiding out in China and that's why they have so many natural resources.

Yes, but how is that going to convince somebody who believes it's true? I'm not asking what your opinion on the matter is, I'm talking about how difficult it is to convince somebody that ghosts don't exist if they have a reason to believe they do.

You're not going to convince them if they think they've got a good reason to believe in something, even if they don't. In fact it seems to be a product of human nature to solidify someone's beliefs if you back them into a corner and they feel like their beliefs are under assault. That's when people easily fall into things like confirmation bias.
