Forza Horizon 5 is a deep and nuanced car nirvana for revheads and auto geeks to endlessly collect, tinker, and experiment. Its also an extremely accessible buffet of racing spectacle open to everyone, from Deluxe Edition diehards to Game Pass nomads no matter their driving skill or mechanical knowledge. Its an occasionally goofy but always earnest Valentine to Mexicos world-famous culture, and a romantic ode to the magic of road-tripping through postcard-perfect vacation vistas. Its a long haul, MMO-inspired racer thats exploding with more races, activities, and event types than can comfortably fit on some parts of the map and yet it still always feels relaxed rather than daunting. It never locks you into something you dont want to do and steadily rewards you for however you choose to play it. It looks beautiful, it sounds magnificent, and it is glorious to play. Yes, Forza Horizon 5 is a lot of things. Above all, however, it is the result of a racing studio at the peak of its craft and the best open-world racing game Ive ever played.

At every turn, Forza Horizon 5 impresses in ways few games have. From the first mile, I was on the edge of my seat. With so much to do in such a relentlessly gorgeous world, I suspect it wont be long before I get the itch to jump back into the drivers seat of my favorite car. Even amidst a competitive racing field, Forza Horizon 5 is a finely tuned supercar.

Forza Horizon 5 is another meaningful evolution of the series as opposed to a reinvention, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a case of more of the same. Even when it is familiar, Forza Horizon 5 makes small, but thoughtful changes to its established blueprint that hones in on the people behind the cars in a way that the franchise has previously just glossed over. It's not going to convince you to give it a go if Forza Horizon's brand of racing hasn't done it for you in the past, but Forza Horizon 5 still stands head and shoulders above anything else in the genre.

Forza Horizon 5 delivers everything that made the last game enjoyable on a map thats more fun to drive with a lot more visual diversity. While the changes and additions are largely incrementalespecially when it comes to the core game experiencewhats here is good enough to warrant a recommendation for fans of the series or racing enthusiasts whove been meaning to try it out.

If all this sounds a lot like Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Horizon 3 and so on, yeah, okay. So what? Sure, Forza Horizon 5 doesnt reinvent the wheel. It doesnt need to. Forza Horizon 5 is constant rise. Its 138 bpm. Its uncut MDMA (or so Ive heard). There are few true thrills in gaming that come without a catch, and Forzas core is still, all these years later, one of them: It feels genuinely fantastic to be on the open road, zooming toward the horizon with nothing on your mind other than the pulsing beat of a killer song, and the unburdened knowledge that you can keep going as long as you want, with no one and nothing around to tell you otherwise.

As expected of Forza. Always the highly reviewed racing series that I'd pick up and play for a couple of hours and never play it again.

Congrats to the only 90+ game of 2021.

Seriously though I wonder what GotY 2021 is gonna on this site. Resident Evil Village is a no brainer finalist but I wonder what the other one is gonna be? Metroid Dread?

It will be hilarious and sad at the same time if the DPP remake is the finalist against RE Village instead of say Metroid Dread, a game people have anticipated for over a decade. Solid Metroid game too.

My wish is for SMTV to be a masterpiece and win GotY altogether.

This year is so weak for video games when you put it into perspective. Resident Evil Village which I assume to be in running for 2021 GotY is presumably at about Resident Evil 7's contest strength and RE7 is like what? The 8th or 9th strongest game of 2017?

I tried this out last night and finally realized what I was doing wrong when I briefly tried Horizon 4. The game starts you with a really fast car that, as someone with literally no experience with the genre, I did not realize was not representative of the overall game. I eventually realized that changing to a slower car also changes the NPCs to the same class, making the experience a lot more manageable. I thought I was just incapable of learning the controls while it's more like the series tosses you into hard mode.

Now that I've figured that out, it's been a lot of fun.

Mine's Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Who cares if it's a 5+ year old port?

But yeah, bad year for videogames. Haven't played Dread yet. Might be P5 Strikers, which is another old game. Yikes. Maybe I'll give it to Forza just for fun.

I have no experience with "realistic" driving sims and am awful at drifting so I was frustrated in the one 1.5 hour session I've had with it. Unsure if I'll go back to try and learn or just move to something else.

Also haven't been a fan of the locale so far. Wish I would've gotten in on Horizon 4. I think it would've been more to my liking.
