Series low point.

Everything was slow as hell and even though it contained what was (imo) the single most important change in the series (the phys/special split) it was a hugely disappointing generation in so many ways - despite the increased power of the DS, the characters weren't animated and the 3D was very rudimentary. The multiplayer options sucked.

Heart Gold / Soul Silver and Platinum were much better, though.

Black and White were a huuuuuuuuuuge improvement.

I started with Red/Blue (on launch day in the US, no less!)

Gold/Silver were INCREDIBLE. Ruby/Sapphire were kind of a letdown but still good. Diamond and Pearl felt like a big step down from R/S, though.

Ive got a lot of nostalgia for the era for various reasons, but yeah, they had the worst gamefeel of the entire franchise.

The remakes are also doing nothing to win me over. I keep waiting for some news on new content that might tempt me to revisit it. FRLG had the Sevii Islands, HGSS had a ton of new features and post-game content. ORAS completely renovated several areas, added an epilogue, and loaded the Soaring mechanic with legendary Pokemon to capture. Throw me a frickin bone here

Black and White and their sequels are easily the best in the entire series. And there's no nostalgia bias here since I just played them for the first time about 2 years ago.

Kind of annoyed with myself for never wanting to give them a chance before because I thought the in battle Pokemon graphics were hideous >______>

It singlehandedly brought the best mechanic the Pokemon series has (physical/special split) so calling it the worst is just wrong. I would put 1, 2, 3, and 8 below it.

But I'll admit Gen 4 had some of the best Pokemon overall. Top 3 at least

But yeah, even the speed boost from platinum was slow as shit compared to Gen 3.

I didn't like base D/P a whole ton (still played a ton of Pearl tho). The speed was terribly slow. Personally, I feel like Gen 6 and maybe even Gen 8 so far was worse than 4 if only because Platinum improved on D/P a ton and HG/SS was pretty gosh darn good.

Diamond and Pearl weren't great, no.
Platinum 100% was, because it fixed 95% of D/P's issues and added a ton of stuff to do post-E4. Just a fantastic game.
Plus, the Distortion World is my favorite ever Pokemon area. It's just so eerie and out there and kind of gives you a sense of what Giratina is and what its existence has been like.

Gen 5 is the overall strongest Gen, I'll concede to that though. Unova's definitely the best-designed region and it has N and Ghetsis.

I think I had a very different experience with D/P than most. I played on a flashcart so saves and loading were instant. And I also had a code to increase all text speed and movement speed. >_>

Needless to say I never noticed a lot of the problems people mention.

Agreed. Entirely forgettable, and Platinum did not improve upon DP enough to redeem it. HGSS was literally the only good thing about Gen 4.

My controversial take is that HGSS is low tier. The Pokemon selection for most of the game is absolutely pathetic. I started a new playthrough a few months ago and nearly every Pokemon I thought about using I couldn't get until after the Elite Four, or by trading. The ones I did settle on using I had to spend ages looking for because they have something like a 1% appearance rate. AND there's barely any trainers to battle before the Elite Four, so good luck training more than three pokemon at most. Train one for a bit and change your mind? That experience you put into it was valuable and is now wasted. Oh and the movesets for most available pokemon also really suck. By the time I got to the Elite Four I was just so bored I canned it.

It's definitely the Gen where I first questioned "is this even fun.l?" I put countless hours into R/B, G/S, and R/S. I think I played through Pearl once. Beat Black once, beat X once, and then stopped with Pokmon. And I'll never forget Defog being the shittiest HM ever.

Agreed with everything, TC. I didn't like Gen 4 at the time, and always thought DPP were the bottom of the barrel until SwSh came along and showed me it could be much much worse lol.

Yeah, HG/SS has, like, 95% of the problems that made G/S lame. The level curve is absurdly low, most of the routes and dungeons are either really short or really empty, Kanto is super empty and dull, etc. etc.
There just aren't enough trainers to fight. You trivially annihilate every Kanto gym leader except maybe Blue just on basis of being higher-leveled and/or having 4 or more pokemon. And Johto's pokemon selection is weeeeeeak. The best 2nd-gen mons aren't even accessible before the Elite Four! Houndour and Larvitar.
Pokemon following you is pretty great though, so of course they threw it in the trash and only dug it for Let's Go Pickachu!/Eevee!

It's actually one of my favorite gens, and I started with Red. I do agree with the speed complaint in D/P though.

As much as I loved G/S/C (probably my favorite gen along with R/B/Y at the time), in hindsight, in gen 4 I prefer the level curve (peaking at the 60s rather than the 40s) and Pokemon distribution. The trainers also aren't quite as dumb as in the first two gens, and can occasionally not be total pushovers (that's mainly Cynthia to be fair). And of course, the physical/special split is great.

I quite like the size and diversity of Sinnoh, even if the HM requirements can sometimes be a pain.

The Battle Frontier is pretty good in Plat (and the Underground is an OK distraction). The Vs. Seeker is possibly my favorite way to rebattle trainers.

As for the online, it was certainly better than what we had up to then (i.e. no online).

The novelty of online at the time gives me a decent bit of nostalgia bias for it.
I have the strongest memories with G/S/C though so most of my bias is focused there.

I started with Red/Blue and I thought it was one of the better ones (especially now that the past 3 gens have all been let-downs).

I might be odd though, because I never got into the meta and dont really care about the story, since its mostly the same every time. As such, I pretty much only care about the new Pokmons designs and gen 4 was probably third best in that regard.

I was a hardcore fan of the series for the first 3 generations

D/P was so bad that I didn't touch another new game in the series until Sw/Sh >_>

X & Y are the worst. They had so much potential, and a third version could have redeemed them like Platinum did for D/P. But they were so bad that Gamefreak trashed them, and now just ignores their existence.
