In the last month, I've legitimately had 7 people respond to job openings at my restaurant. Each of them agreed to meet for a job interview. And each of them was a complete no-show at the interview. What the hell is going on with the mentality of people these days?

A better job appeared.
"Competitive wages" have to actually be competitive now. You are competing for labor.

A few notches above that already. And it's West-European minimum wage too, so it's actually livable.

I did this all the time when I was applying tbh. I just sent out a mass amount of applications without any research, and THEN when I got the interview I would go do some research about the job. If I don't actually want that, I'd just no show. I don't feel guilty because I am sure if I did accept the job they wouldn't think twice about fucking me twice as hard.

perhaps you were one of the 76 different low wage jobs they applied to, and merely by scheduling an interview a day later than a competitor, missed out on the talent, because they were tendered an offer by someone else.

Do better. Stop blaming people for doing what's best for them. And don't even for a second think it's about "laziness" -- quite the opposite. You were too slow, too late. Your ineffective management has cost the company time and money. Do better.

Good for them if they found something better but at least have the decency to tell me you're not coming to the interview so I'm not wasting my time sitting there waiting for you. That's just disrespectful.

Do you call the applicants whose resumes are awful?

For that matter, does TC call every applicant to tell them he's not interested in hiring them?

What I'm mainly looking for are delivery drivers and wait staff. I'm not even asking for resumes. Anyone that replies to the ad can come to an interview. That's how low I've set the bar.

I can't even remember the last time I didn't hire someone that showed up for the interview. Everyone that shows up is practically hired unless they really fuck up their interview somehow.

Then what even do you have to offer potential employees? Pay, benefits, what?

Off the top of my head: better pay than what they'd make elsewhere, and if they'd want to take any educational courses on the restaurant business, we'll cover the costs. There might be more but my brother handles most of the personnel-related stuff.

Have you actually checked with other businesses nearby to be sure you're paying better? And are you in a good and accessible location? Doesn't matter how well a place pays if I have to walk more than three quarters a mile from the nearest bus stop. Way too wet this time of year.

People should call if they had agreed to an interview regardless the reason. This isnt a labor rights or benefits issue, its just a common courtesy issue. Itd be like an applicant showing up to an interview only to find it cancelled.

You shouldnt wait more than 5 minutes, no reason to waste your time. Where I work we had hired someone, of course all our interviews are done remotely so its not a big deal if there is a no show but we arent going to wait more than five minutes.
