No, you may not know the formula. It is secret, much like the Krabby Patty. All I will say is that it is NOT my personal list. Anyway I thought I would post the top 100. Here are the first 20 bc I am too lazy to actually type out 100 titles rn. Try to not complain about there being too many old movies since quite frankly there are more recent movies on this top 100 than most of these things you see. Thanks!

100. Sullivan's Travels (1941, Preston Sturges)
99. Rio Bravo (1959, Howard Hawks)
98. The General (1926, Buster Keaton & Clyde Bruckman)
97. Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959, Alain Resnais)
96. The Shop Around the Corner (1940, Ernst Lubitsch)
95. F for Fake (1973, Orson Welles)
94. Lawrence of Arabia (1962, David Lean)
93. Jackie Brown (1997, Quentin Tarantino)
92. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013, Joel & Ethan Coen)
91. Phantom Thread (2017, Paul Thomas Anderson)
90. Children of Paradise (1945, Marcel Carne)
89. Greed (1924, Erich von Stroheim)
88. Fanny and Alexander (1982, Ingmar Bergman)
87. The Big Parade (1925, King Vidor)
86. The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums (1939, Kenji Mizoguchi)
85. Faust (1926, F.W. Murnau)
84. Ordet (1955, Carl Theodor Dreyer)
83. Late Spring (1949, Yasujiro Ozu)
82. A Separation (2011, Asghar Farhadi)
81. Jules and Jim (1962, Francois Truffaut)

Ok 17 was just a random number lol.

All 3 LOTR movies, Blade Runner/2049, Godfather 1&2, The Thing, City Of God, but the last 2 change from time to time.
So 9.

Using a formula you've curated to ensure that most everything on the list is something you approve of.

It's the same thing with more steps

i think its probably a better formula than any other Ive seen such as Reddit/IMDb and possibly even they shoot pictures

maybe a bit of recency bias but oh well

Certainly has flaws but then again so do all of these things

why wouldnt a list of the best movies ever largely be older movies? The feature length film has existed since at least 1912. Theres simply more of them and theyve already stood the test of time compared to more recent movies

Interesting list, Ive seen most of these and some of my favorites are on there. Only one movie (The Ascent) directed by a woman is obviously an issue. I love The Red Shoes, but seeing it at the top makes me curious about your methodology since you dont usually see it so high on these lists.

Misc. things:
  • 4 Hitchcock in the top 20 is a lot
  • no Godard
  • only one Ozu
  • no Rashomon
  • 3 Tarantino in a top 100 is pushing it
  • 4 Powell and Pressburger films makes me think you used the BFI top 100 British films as a reference (nothing wrong with that. I like their movies, its just unusual seeing them featured so prominently)
  • no John Ford
  • only one Buuel
  • only one Truffaut
  • happy to see a couple documentaries in there
  • no animation
  • The Night of the Hunter is my top movie, so good to see it so high
  • happy with Do the Right Thing being so high too. I think its star is rising and it should naturally climb its way up top film lists
  • Bergman topping out at 60 is odd

Overall, fine list and Id like to know more about its creation if youre willing to share (PM me?)

No sharing

the list is skewed towards more popular movies which is why theres a bit of recency bias (IE the QT, PTA, Coen bros showing up so much) and some of the more widely seen older directors (Hitchcock) show up a lot.

And then its mostly safer entry level older movies. Also very surprised by the archers love tbh.

unsure of how to make ratings weighted bc im dumb so we will have to settle for this tbh
