They had built up enough credit that I sat through the awful shit they fed the last few seasons of Dexter.

But I don't think there is any left for me to give them another shot.

I thought that first episode was pretty good. There's some stretches the guy went out hunting by himself? Harrison was able to find him but nobody else (granted, I don't remember if Dexter is wanted)? but I think the setting change does it good (as the supporting cast was never that good) and I'm interested enough in seeing what happens next.

I honestly thought it was a decent watch. I just enjoy watching Michael C. Hall do his thing.

The writing for the episode was admittedly not great - Harrison showing up the same day that Dexter finally kills again is a bit contrived. Although maybe they are trying to imply that it's what finally pushed him over the edge? Either way, I can forgive this in order to set the season up. Also the symbolism of the white deer was fairly heavy-handed.

What happens that makes it beat the Dexter as a teenager scene?

  1. The writing/dialogue is laughably bad. Like legitimately one of the worst scripts I've ever seen.
  2. It is humorless. The original run was unique because of the dark sense of humor interjected throughout the voiceover and in the dialogue by the lovable side characters. There was so much that could have been done to punch up this script in that same vein--some tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement about how ridiculous this scenario is or how badly the previous series, etc.--but instead they seemed to opt for extraordinarily lame, by-the-numbers Lifetime movie writing.
  3. It is drama-less. We haven't seen Dexter in a decade and the opening shot is just him running through the woods in overalls... No build up, no reveal, nothing. Just boring, lazy trash.
  4. The acting is over the top and pathetic. MCH clearly doesn't care and is just doing this for a paycheck.
  5. They went the Suicide Squad route and tried to cover up for a lack of quality by shoving in pop songs into every single scene, even if they don't fit, hoping slack-jawed idiots will confuse a good song for a good show. And it looks like it's working on some of you.
  6. It just looks terrible. Remember how the contrast of the vividness and beauty of Miami with the grim subject matter made the original Dexter so novel? Well, remove all of the color and change the palette to muted orange and shades of gray and here is New Blood. And the CGI deer is the worst thing I've ever seen.

1.

1. Good job on only watching the best shows on television. I'm not going to call the script amazing, but if it's one of the worst scripts you've ever seen, you haven't seen many.

2. I think there were some decent bits in there. The police call and Dexter and the asshole in the bar come to mind. The humor in Dexter also often leaned a bit too much into cheese (Masuda), so I'm willing to give it time putting the humor in given there was no narration until the end and this episode was clearly setting up a show after years of inactivity.

3. Again, it's the pilot. The lack of drama is exactly the point, given that the drama starts because of what Dexter does at the end.

4. Just don't agree. MCH not caring would be a good Dexter, because he is pretty emotionless most of the time.

5. This is just a dumb remark, even if I agree with the general nature of it, I definitely wasn't affected negatively or positively by the music.

6. Blood in the snow is also contrast.

I just can't understand how anyone can watch this and think that it is anything but a desperate cash grab on all accounts. Literally no one involved in this series is trying, based on the first episode.

Watched the first two episodes and while it's not actively bad, it's just not very interesting.

Maybe I'm misremembering but I don't remember Dexter killing someone with such weak evidence. So this event being the one to break his 10 year killing spree seems off.

Watched Episode 2 last night.

Watchable, but the teenager parts are horrendous. And Angela forcing the whole "Hey, your son should hang out with my daughter and other kids their age" parts were absurd. Angela is a cop who just found out Dexter has a son, and she wants this kid to hang out with her daughter? WTF.

There are actually some decent ideas for this series, but the execution has been awful. Could've been a good small-town horror show but instead it has become unintentional comedy.
