I dont like EMMI and feel like the game would be better without it. I am not sure why EMMI is in this game, they make you get game overs a lot. If they werent in the game at all I dont think much would change.

EMMI is cool. The game needs an iconic enemy.

It's fine, I guess. Didn't seem as good as SA-X

I hated them. Getting pursued by the SA-X was fun and tense and never felt cheap, but every EMMI section took me out of the game until it was over. Really brought down what could have been a top 3 game in the series for me.

I never really cared for the SA-X moments in Fusion, don't care about it here.

I had the same reaction to the EMMI sections. I get why people would enjoy them, but theyre not what I wanted out of a Metroid game and felt like a chore.

Feel like they could have done it better - fun at first and not so fun after a couple of encounters

I feel like the only major complaint I have is that the counter times were a bit too strict. I think they could have been just a little bit more generous.

Outside of that, they kinda felt very same-y and I would've rathered each encounter feel a bit different, including how to beat them. It was find a good spot to camp and shoot for a while which wasn't great.

I do really like them conceptually though.

they kinda started giving them gimmicks, like Morph Ball being the first to crawl, and Speed Booster charging at you

but then Ice Missile and Wave Beam were just "we're gonna shoot and stun you if you're within our line of sight"

That's true, actually. The fact I forgot about it makes me feel like it's still not significant.

I dunno, I would've mostly likely more than just stand in a corner and shoot until they die.

SA-X sections were pretty short and limited. Think they are highly overrated and at this point maybe make people nostalgia blind.

I can understand not liking the EMMI sections, but not enjoying SA-X at the same time.

I also didn't realize they had gimmicks on a first playthrough.

Through multiple playthroughs speed EMMI is absolutely horrifying. The rest are nonthreats. Cloak is still a waste of time.

Very true. The moment I stopped treating them like a stealth mission, the far easier it got.

Tbh I don't think they did enough with them. I would've been down for them being able to go literally around the entire map, or at least larger unmarked sections or something. They needed to up the stakes a bit. With it generally being easier to outrun them instead of cloaking like you're supposed to, and getting respawned right at the entrance whenever they caught you, I don't think they did a good enough job making players actually fear them.

Part of the fear of the SA-X, even though it was scripted events, was that it was unannounced. It was "oh I'll fall through the crumble blocks oh crap the SA-X is down there." With the emmi zones being clearly defined, and them being too easy to bypass for the most part and the punishment for failing to do so not being harsh enough, it doesn't really accomplish the same effect.

I love them as a concept, I just think it could've been better implemented, even if it slows the game down.

I was worried I would dislike them but they were fine. Destroying the face playing was kinda aggravating for a few of them. I think it was crucial that getting caught only reset you to right before entering the EMMI area, though; if it would have been a full game over sending you back to the last save point they would have been extremely frustrating.

EMMIs are probably closer to ZM's Zero Suit section

Having just replayed Fusion, I can confirm that the SA-X sections are complete nothingburgers. There's like 2 total, maybe 3, and they're never longer than a minute. They're a very miniscule part of the game.

The EMMIS are far more ambitious and interesting. I personally liked them a lot.

SA-X simplicity is why it works. You have no idea when you'll suddenly run into one or how/when you'll get away from it, and assuming a first playthrough you'll always be wondering when it'll show up again. It does a lot more with less compared to EMMI's "well here's the monster, probably with a cutscene introducing it, and here's how far it can chase you"

It's easy to see SA-X not being everyone's thing but it's not like objectively bad design, neither is EMMI's more in-your-face threat. They tried different things with both, which I think I prefer to just "SA-X 2.0" even though I didn't care for EMMI at all.

SA-X was okay but a little too scripted. Most of the encounters had a fairly obvious hiding space which, if you ventured out of it, you were 100% fucked. Just get in this space where it's not gonna see you and stay there.

EMMI was much more something you had a chance with, although the more freeform nature of the encounters meant that they weren't always super satisfying. The need to make the encounters get harder later in the game, even as you become more capable, did mean the last few got pretty cheap. The idea of it patrolling a certain area, and you wouldn't know where it was until you entered was mostly good, but sometimes you just entered the area and it was right there and there was nothing you could do, and that was really lame.

I agree that EMMI is closer to the Zero Suit sequence than the SA-X.

I really liked the EMMIs. Two notes though:

1) It would have heightened the intensity if one of the late-game EMMIs broke out into the rest of one of the lands.

2) Make the EMMI territories more interesting after they are defeated.

Otherwise, they were great and I liked how they scaled up with powers as you were gaining powers too.

I think they overplay their hand here. They constantly mention it and then severely underutilized it. You leave the game feeling like all this buildup for SA-X was for nothing.
