I know he spent the better part of a year shit talking and attempting to discredit Fauci, WHO, CDC etc. But did he ever directly tell people not to get vaccinated?

I ask because I just can't understand anti vaxxers. Meaning the Trump administration pushed the vaccine, Trump and his family GOT the vaccine...yet his cult still thinks it's some government conspiracy to microchip us or something outrageous? I would've thought the orange messiah getting the vaccine would've been the end of the debate, yet here we are. Dude can talk people into eating horse dewormer and all other kinds of BS cures, but an actual vaccine is the line.

Wtf

He got the Pfizer vaccine himself and told his supporters to get it.

A lot of what he said and did during the pandemic was nothing more than catering to his audience. He knew exactly what buttons to push to get elected in 2016, and nearly succeeded in getting re-elected in 2020. Remember, he's not really a politician.

Mostly before he was President. Here's an article from 2016: https://www.historyofvaccines.org/trump-and-vaccines
It can't be overstated, however, how much a small concession to a niche group by an authority creates in-group out-group dynamics. Trump was constantly pushing false hope grift cures, like hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, or even bleach, deeply undermined science-based policies and deeply emboldened even the nuttiest of conspiracy quacks. And it was mostly for political gain: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/trump-cdc-interference-house-committee-coronavirus-1257495/
It's no surprise that anti-vax is overwhelming becoming a political issue: https://www.psypost.org/2021/06/study-indicates-donald-trump-was-the-main-anti-vaccination-influencer-on-twitter-in-2020-61032

He denounced vaccines in 2016, saying that doctors used scary looking needles with a giant cocktail of who-knows-what into babies. He stressed how big and scary the syringe was, and showed support for linking autism and vaccines.

I'd say that counts as anti-vax.

Yeah, putting things like ivermectin on the same level as vaccines when it comes to "how to deal with COVID" is anti-vax even if you aren't saying "Don't get the vaccine".

Most anti-vaxxers don't say "No one should be allowed to get a vaccine".

It started with him opposing masks and pretending covid wasn't that bad. Then because the vaccine starting becoming available after he lost the presidency, he didn't care about pushing it. That allowed the chuds who supported him to turn their anti-mask, anti-restriction sentiment into anti-vax sentiment. It really didn't matter whether he was explicitly anti-vax or just silent.

"Trump voters tend to worship him." Never said all Trump voters worship him. Let's not pretend these things didn't happen / aren't happening:
  • Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the capitol based solely on blatant lies told by Trump
  • Trump supporters made a golden Trump statue at CPAC
  • Wyoming GOP is ostracizing Liz Cheney because she doesn't kiss Trump's ass
  • Arizona GOP is doing whatever Trump tells them to by conducting pointless audits even after the election was confirmed.
  • GOP state legislatures across the country are enacting voting rights restrictions because Trump convinced them them that widespread voter fraud exists
  • Evangelicals making claims that high profile religious figures (angels, god himself, etc.) would reverse the 2020 election results
  • Trump supporters were repeatedly stranded in the cold after his rallies in 2020 and they saw nothing wrong with this

Your confusion comes from thinking Trump had real influence over these people. That's not exactly it. They followed him only because he appealed to things they already believed to begin with. He spoke to their base nature of sexism, racism and anti-intellectualism (among other things.) Trump gave them permission to go full mask off, so to speak and emboldened them to act in the way they've always wanted to.

You left out the rest of the sentence, the part where he yelled "AND FIGHT LIKE HELL!!!" after directing a crowd of lunatics to march down to the Capitol.

Only after they did just that did he add the "oh and do it peacefully" disclaimer. An hour or two into the chaos. Absolutely nothing about the speech beforehand implied they should "peacefully protest".

Isn't that exactly what influencing is though? Telling/showing people what they want to hear and/or preying on their fears and insecurities to gain their support?
