Not delivery, and not special/huge orders, just a standard take out; do you tip?

If so, how much is considered normal?

Generally not. And I find it really annoying when restaurants add a tip by default to the online orders and make you specifically have to remember to take off the tip.

Usually at least a little bit - even if they arent bringing the food to you like normal service theres still some extra labor involved (for example, I had a gf who worked at a restaurant where the servers were the ones who put together the salads for to-go orders, along with all the other little things like double checking that the order was correct, that there was plastic flatware/napkins/straws etc.)

my rule of thumb:

is my order being carried through a door to me? yes? tip. no? don't tip.

same would be true of a special delivery was made to my home.
or my luggage being removed from a taxi, or bus. or moved into a hotel room.

....but for takeout? heck no. why?

I put yes since I normally do to support local businesses. However, if it's like a drive thru, it's an obvious no.

You're talking about picking up food in person from a restaurant? I didn't even know that people tipped for that. Delivery or a sitdown restaurant would be one thing but there's no reason to tip if you're just picking it up

This. If I'm gonna put pants on and drive all the way to the restaurant and go inside and grab the bag, no tip. It doesn't even cross my mind. But I always tip for dine-in and delivery.

If i'm in the mcdonalds drivethrough and they tell me to pull around cause the food will take a minute longer, i'm not gonna tip them. I'm not tipping curbside pickup either.

These days, I do 20ish percent

used to not tip for pickup orders, and give a10%/a few bucks for deliveries, but these days with how shitty it is to work in restaurants and service jobs, I think they deserve all the extra tips they can getand the end difference in cost to me is only a few bucks so why not?

Yes, 20%.

I work in the food industry. I know how it is.

Edit: In the US, do you see a server? Host? Cashier? Bartender? Anyone who isn't the chef or cook at a food place? They aren't making a living wage. Hell, they aren't making minimum wage. All of your tips are the salary they use to literally survive on. Full stop. Tip or cook at home.

Yeah. Usually 15% or $2, not as much as I'd tip normally. But as someone who works food service I know the bullshit workers put up with for the little pay they get, so I try to give back.

Also helps people remember me and I've gotten the hook up on extra food.
