"Internet service providers have a gentleman's agreement to prioritise certain parts of the country so that they all make money without interfering with each other's profits" is a theory positing a mutually beneficial business arrangement between massive conglomerates. There's charts that seem to confirm this, showing that the country is divided into pretty equal portions where the biggest ISPs all dominate their respective sector, and the stakes of this conspiracy go as far as to draw a connection between inadequate services offered by these companies, a refusal to improve because they have no competition, and the total monopoly they have in their neck of the woods which seems to confirm that assertion. What are the stakes, and who is empowered by this theory? The stakes relate to a service that many people rely on but who often report low satisfaction with, and it plays to a narrative of weakening consumer rights which is an issue happening more and more in America - which empowers people who are aware of the weakening of consumer's rights, who are unhappy with the lack of support their local ISP provides. There's a coherent idea there, a coherent connection between what the theory is and what it affects in the world. It plays to a very real issue. But what the fuck is Qanon? A disjointed, rambling diatribe fearmongering about a satanic cabal being combated by extremist Republicans, ascribing compassionate reasons for their lack of public compassion. Donald Trump isn't a callous idiot, he's trying to stop Hillary Clinton and her satanic cabal of deep state cohorts from torturing children, because torturing children releases a chemical in their blood that said deep state conspirators feast off of. What are the stakes, and who's empowered by the theory? The stakes are the lives of all children, who risk being kidnapped, raped, tortured and killed by evil satanic pedophiles. It's designed to appeal to the broadest base, because no-one wants children to be kidnapped, raped, tortured and killed. The point of the theory is to justify Donald Trump and the other callous idiots who follow in his stead to remain in power, by claiming that their public persona is in favour of a noble interior crusade and that any perceived bad on their part is a broader plot to do good. It empowers an extreme faction of the political right who seek to further enrich themselves, cutting taxes and regulations to businesses who are already making record profits, while weakening the ability of the average American citizen to provide for themselves in comparison. The people who are most likely to peddle this theory are the same people who have the most to lose by its proliferation. It exists to further drive a wedge between the sort of people who should be sticking together and looking out for their own wellbeing. But in peddling qanon, those same people feel empowered. The ISP thing is a conspiracy theory. It draws a connection between a perceived lack of ISP quality in America, and the lack of alternative services in certain parts of the country - including other big multi-million ISP companies. There's both precedent and intent behind the theory - we've seen the rise of industrial cartels before, in the co-operation between lightbulb companies to shorten the lifespan of their products to make more money. We're well aware of efforts to weaken consumer laws in America so that you're always getting the worst deal and you can't swap to another service. There's a point to it. Qanon is a conspiracy fantasy, where the appeal is that there's a great evil at work and you, as someone who's on the inside, feel as if you're empowered to do the right thing.
