no, but I can see why some people would mistake it for one: it is set on 24 December, which is not Christmas Day, and the song Let it Snow, which contains no reference of any kind to Christmas, is played at the end. perfectly understandable mistake

We arent going to get anywhere without a clear and agreed upon definition of Christmas movie.

The way I see it, if it isnt one, then a whole lot of other movies dont qualify either.

There are terrorists and a whole lot of murder. The tone doesn't match a Christmas movie.

No, it's not, because themes of Christmas are sprinkled on to the plot rather than woven in.

If you removed all of the Christmas elements the only thing that would change is some dialogue but not the plot.

If you removed all of the Christmas elements from Elf it would be an entirely different movie.

in all seriousness, this is my general point too -- Home Alone is my go-to example, since Kevin's whole character arc is about finding the "real meaning" of christmas

No. It doesn't directly deal with a Christmas story theme. A Christmas Story, Rudolph the Red Nosed reindeer, Jingle All the Way, The Santa Clause and How the Grinch Stole Christmas are all good examples. Die Hard is not one, sorry.

I disagree. If all of the Christmas elements were eliminated he would just be learning to value his family. A couple dialogue changes. It isnt like he had a weird conception of Christmas at the beginning. He was just annoyed by his family and eventually learned to value them.

I do agree that we could work with the is it superficial argument as far as how to define a Christmas movie. Amusingly, it eliminates virtually all hallmark Christmas movies, and arguably Its a Wonderful Life.

No, because it's about a man trying to reconnect with his estranged family on Christmas. You make it take place on another day, then John McClane wouldn't be there.

Yes. It takes place during Christmas, but Christmas is also explicitly the reason why all the characters are there. The objective of the movie for the hero is to reunite with his family. He is motivated by family, and the villain he comes upon on Christmas Eve is motivated by greed - the two faces of Christmas. Spending time with your family vs material greed.

...Also, the fact it ends with Let It Snow and actually has more Christmas songs and settings than a lot of traditional Christmas movies doesn't hurt.

That makes no sense. The entire movie would not work if it didn't take place near Christmas.

How? It's a very basic action movie plot that so happens to be on Christmas Eve.

The "just remove Christmas" argument is kind of bum. You could do Jingle All The Way and change it to the kid's birthday. You can do A Christmas Carol and change it to Thanksgiving. If we're using that, only anything involving Santa and Rudolph directly would be considered a Christmas movie.

Scrooged. And technically Die Hard is a Christmas movie but I don't consider it a must see at Christmas. Heck, I always watched it and the other 2 in the summer. These are must see Christmas movies to me.

Miracle on 34th Street the original
A Christmas Carol (I watch several different versions)
It's a Wonderful Life
A Christmas Story
The Santa Clause (the first one, the others are bad)
Nightmare Before Christmas
Home Alone 1 and 2

I get tired of seeing most everyone on this site saying their favorite Christmas movie is Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Batman Returns and saying most of the ones I mentioned are dull and boring.

Christmas music comprises a variety of genres of music regularly performed or heard around the Christmas season. Music associated with Christmas may be purely instrumental, or in the case of carols or songs may employ lyrics whose subject matter ranges from the nativity of Jesus Christ, to gift-giving and merrymaking, to cultural figures such as Santa Claus, among other topics. Many songs simply have a winter or seasonal theme, or have been adopted into the canon for other reasons.
