I think sometimes it's nice to eat food made by professional chefs. I'm a decent cook but there's a reason they're professionals. I avoid the chain restaurants and always eat at local joints. For Applebee's food, there's always sports bars and traditional diners but that's always risky if you go deep into the menu.
