Mall security or store security never does anything to them for whatever reason

Why hire them if all they do is stand there and watch them steal?

Saw people here in San Francisco steal from Niketown yet the guard or any of the store workers did nothing. Could have at least try to block their view from the door and/or restrain them

I used to work in a grocery store. Once a bunch of teens did a beer run and one of our managers chased them. One of the thieves smacked him in the head with a 40oz and bloodied him real good. Yeah screw confronting thieves its not worth risking and injury.

I don't know the exact rules, but they're very limited in apprehending someone.

When I was at Macy's, I heard one guy from the loss prevention got dropped for just crossing the imaginary store limit right outside the door chasing someone. Another guy got smacked in the face because really all he's got is his hands.

From what I made out, loss prevention and mall security really exists just to...call the cops or hope the suspect is nave enough to fold.

Even ignoring the fact that San Francisco basically decriminalized thefts under $950, it's usually not a good idea to confront groups of thieves.

So no, I wouldn't do anything beyond reporting it to police.

Kinda. Tech stores have a lot of people come in trying to scam cash out of the register with fake credit cards. Extremely easy to recognize. I wasn't paid for it, but I was always called over to deal with them.

but aside from that, i don't care unless it turns violent.

No, and you would be stupid to. I think even most corporations even tell their employees not to do anything regarding theft, it's not worth risking your life to save a product or some money. Best case scenario, their faces are clearly on camera, and the authorities can handle it. Worst case, corporation sucks up the small loss.

Worked in a grocery store a few years ago, when a couple guys literally took an entire shopping cart of meat out through the secondary door and no one stopped them. Grocery Store security don't get paid enough to deal with that, and to be honest, it isn't really the job of security in the first place.

People have this misunderstanding that Securities job is to chase after criminals, it isn't. It's to prevent it from happening in the first place through detection and deterrence. Once it happens, then its the job of the police to deal with. The reason is that security guards are bound by the same laws as normal civilians. So if they apprehend someone they can get into a whole lot of legal issues, despite them being security guards.

I know this, as I was a security guard for 8 years. There are different rules regarding armed security that I can't speak of, as I was never one. But unarmed security are there for property deterrence and protection. If anyone breaks in, we call the cops. We aren't allowed to carry weapons as "it can be used against us". Stupid, I know... but I wasn't going to argue against it, especially considering I was getting paid 12/h during the time when min. wage was something like 9.75.

Stores have insurance for that very reason. Anything that is stolen they can claim on loss insurance and get that back fairly quickly.

I was always told that if I suspected someone of shoplifting, I should follow them around the store without approaching them, so that there would be three avenues for evidence during prosecution; security footage, missing stock, and eyewitness testimony.

This is true. I didn't realize all of that until I tried to work security for sporting events. They put a lot of emphasis on the fact that we were not allowed to touch people, period. If a fight breaks out, we report it, but otherwise do nothing. Not at all what I expected security would be like lol.

Yeah, the idea is you say hi and acknowledge people, so any potential thief knows the employees see you, have eyes on you, can describe you, etc.

It wont stop an organized group, but the idea is that it may dissuade a single person. When I started my job at a bank, the rule was that whenever someone entered you looked them in the eye and said hello, even if you had to take a second to glance away from your current customer.
