I don't agree with Chappelle with the whole trans controversy, but I have no issue with what he's doing here. Especially if no matter who wins the poll, both sides' donations make it to the school (rather than whichever poll side wins).

Spiteful charity is still spiteful and petty. It'd be like if I built a school and named it "[guy I hate] has a small penis institution of learning" and tricked it out with the latest and greatest equipment and best teachers. Does it help a community? Sure, but it's still petty.

One concept of Comedy is social commentary. He's putting on a master class for you while manipulating you at the same time. So donate up and maybe someday you will stop that evil comedian from telling jokes forever

Like you mentioned, it's not even an official contest. It's just Chappelle, who is set to have the school named after him in April, saying that anyone who disagrees with it should donate to the school and make a note objecting. And if more people donate (or more money? idk) that object, he will "step aside". Whatever that means. Does that just mean he won't attend the ceremony, or that he will tell the school not to name the school after him? And there's no indication the school would even participate in this or change their plan if that did happen.

Doesn't really matter. Chappelle saying it on instagram isn't going to drum up opposers to donate in droves against him. But still, if the school gets extra donations, that can't be anything but good.

Edit: just realized it's naming the theater after him, not the school

Would be interesting if in April the school went public with whether or not people donated specifically in favor or against Chappelle as part of this suggestion
