Heard from my auntie that my cousin quit being an RN because its too much BS and politics

Like seriously. why the fuck would you give up $100,000 (or higher) and the chance of buying a nice house, nice car, and setting yourself up for a nice retirement because nursing is too much BS?!?

I would never give up all that money and the opportunities to buy all the nice things you want. Every job has BS

Blame insurance for that. Half or more of a doctor's time is paperwork.

Well, I bet even without insurance they'd be bigger workhorses

Untrue. Do nurses pick up unpaid call or get called in for emergency surgery/STEMIs? Do nurses see upwards of 20 inpatients daily?

It's a stressful job. Hell, a lot of healthcare is. I'm the maintenance director at a nursing home and there's always something going wrong or needing fixed. I interact with residents a lot, but obviously not as much as nursing.

I've seen a lot of them come and go. And they usually always looked stressed.

Like everyone else has said, barely any RNs are making six figures, and it's a stressful job.

I'm not a nurse, but I work in patient care and really want to change careers. My pay is good but you really do need a passion for it to be worth it.

Covid has taken its toll on a lot of nurses. The surges and having to take care of so many patients.. It's stressing them out.

Even before that.. Nursing is not an easy job and not easy for everyone. It's demanding, often understaffed and you don't always get the best shifts and you have to deal with patients and shitty management/bureaucracy (although this happens in every field)

I think it heavily depends on where you live and the standard of living there.

Average salary for nurses in South Dakota is like 60k while average in california is in the 110ks. Years of experience, degree, type of nurses count too of course.

  1. Administration treating nursing as an expense rather than an asset, leaving units working short staffed with with too many patients to safely care for.
  2. Most states have little to no union support, leading to lower wages, higher patient ratios, increased burnout, etc.
  3. Rude, entitled, ignorant, unpleasant patients and their families.
  4. Lots of nursing jobs are very physical and cause injuries either from poor lifting in unfavorable conditions or from gradual wear on your joints. Healthcare workers are often very high up on the list for most frequently injured profession. I've had literally zero of my injured coworkers tell me how great and supportive management and the worker's comp process was in helping them get back to work as safely as possible.
  5. High emotional stress if you work in ER, ICU, etc
There's probably more but those were the reasons I could come up with in 2-3 minutes. It's not a terrible job but there are way easier and less stressful ways to make decent money. Thankfully I don't have any children and made a lot of good investments so I only have to do it for another 12 years or so probably then I can retire early. I also quit the ICU after 9 years and took a super cush procedural job for the same pay and better hours, lol. I probably would have just gone into designing software had I known what hospital nursing is actually like.

E: unless you're going for a nurse anesthetist license or a nurse practitioner a nursing doctorate is actual useless garbage. You'd make more money throwing your tuition into a bitcoin hail mary. Also most doctors work super hard and are great to work with. Obviously there are a couple morons occaisonally but that's any job.

I think they meant the nurses do most of the work, as in 95 out of the 100. Not that they do less.

Edit: ah, nvm. Yeah, 95 seems hyperbole.
