Rockstar Games co-founder Jamie King has weighed in on the future of the company during an interview with Killaz, suggesting that future titles including Grand Theft Auto 6 may not be as edgy or quite as funny compared to what were used to.

King said that he doesnt feel that the gameplay mechanics will change all that much, but culturally, said theres a difference due to various departures at the studio.

I wouldnt be surprised if the tone starts changing. And if its maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny. I just think maybe theres more opportunity for them to do something cheesy, cause they never do. Maybe not. Theres a beautiful machine there that youd have to try real hard to fuck up.

Rockstar Games hasnt announced Grand Theft Auto 6 yet, although theres been plenty of speculation doing the rounds over the past few years. One of the more recent rumors has pegged the game for a release no earlier than 2025, and that it may feature destructible skyscrapers.

I mean San Andreas wasn't edgy or funny and people liked it.

GTA 4 was edgy as hell and people seem to prefer 5.

And the fanbase of GTA online and popularity of GTA5 videos seems to imply that they love the goofiness of the game rather than the crime aspect.

As long as I can still steal cars and shoot everything that moves (and at least some things that don't), it's still GTA.

I mean the follow the train meme was funny but that was more an aftereffect of the game rather than the game itself.

What parts of SA were particularry funny? You just drove around shooting people in different color shirts for 12 hours as you slowly change the color of the map.

What people seem to remember is the goofiness. The jetpack, the muscle/fat thing, the girlfriends, Big Smoke etc. All that fits in to cheesy less edgy less funny GTA.

I mean even the plot of SA is cheesy. You're wrongfully accused of crimes you didn't commit so you immeidately commit 578 murders, 245 GTAs, 197 assaults, 154 thefts and a bit of trespassing.

It had the cheesy self-awareness that Watchdogs 2 lacked

Well they lost all of their top writers/talent that where responsible for all of the edge and humor so thats not surprising.

Rockstar started its transformation into a soulless money hungry generic big name gaming company years ago and the transformation is almost complete.

I enjoy GTA and still play 5, but I've never found the games funny. Not offensive, just trying a little too hard to be edgy and "adult". While I love a good pun, that and the constant innuendo gets to be too much and mildly kills the immersion.
No billion dollar company or going to go by "Gruppe Sechs". A few, fine, but virtually every company has some sexual innuendo for their name, and I cant believe the scooter (***gio) hasn't been renamed if nothing else.

I was actually thinking last night, everyone pretty much expects them to do Vice City next and that would be neat, but how cool would it be to do Las Venturas instead. They could really play on the whole mafia angle and do something different and unexpected with a GTA city that hasn't been used all that much.

Good. RDR2's vibe is infinitely better than GTAs. Also, Franklin was the best character because he was the straight man. I'm too old for GTA edge to hit the same as when I was younger

Yeah GTA5 lacked the depth and nuance that early GTA games had. It wasnt to bad though but I can see how if they continue on the same road the series will get really stale.

Well, toning down the humor implies less personality; ie, a lot of the people that made RDR2 (in production since 2013) and the previous games great are not there now, as this person is letting us know.

RDR2 will be the pinnacle of Rockstar games for probably years, maybe forever. It was before the exodus of developers. A last hurrah from that team.

Basically, I think it is definitely your latter suggestion and not your former.

I'm not fussed about it not being "edgy", because usually anything that describes itself as edgy... isn't, but I'm worried about it having less humour.

If a GTA game isn't funny, then all the stuff that happens in it would be pretty darn horrible.
