It was very clearly rushed. Like, it seems like they had some cool ideas, but then adult swim told them they were only giving them like 8 episodes or something, and they were like "...shit."

That definitely feels like the case. I didn't like Ashi, maybe with more time in the oven, I would have? But I wasn't a fan at all. Art style / animation was great. The story and ending sucked terribly. Like others said, it felt incredibly rushed.
