The level of trolling this would be, after all the leaks and rumours... I uh, hope I didn't jump the gun on this.

Ok, #1 worst case scenario is concert event/no game, #2 worst case scenario is PC/Mobile like pixel remaster. But since it's a remaster of a PSX game I want to believe it'd go right to console/PSN like the FF7/8/9 remasters before it!

I know this has already been discussed in the other topic but.... Why Chrono Cross? There's dozens of Square games that deserve being remade than this.

Xenogears the most obvious one.

Plus, the best thing you could do with a Chrono Trigger remake is to give it the FF7R treatment and get all meta with the idea of a sequel or remake. That's just what Chrono Cross already is!

If it is faithful to the source material and has enough implementations like FF7R to make it a different but enjoyable experience from the original, I'd say it has the potential to be one of the best Remakes ever like FF7R and Resident Evil 2.

I don't even mind just a scene-to-scene, faithful remake to the original, just in a 3D setting with great production values and full camera control.

If they are gonna do a remake like Secret of Mana though, I'd rather the game not be touched.

There's basically no way this is a remake for folks getting their hopes built up - most likely going to be a simple port with maybe a smattering of QoL. Billed as a remaster, of course, but I'll be legitimately surprised if it's anything beyond the basics.

Well, it's not weird. Chrono Trigger has gotten multiple ports and updated versions, and Cross hasn't.

Also! Chrono Cross is a sequel to and a reimagining of Chrono Trigger, and all the stuff people hate about it also doesn't stop the original from being a masterpiece!

The world does not DESERVE another Chrono sequel until Cross gets the respect it rightfully deserves!

To actually make Chrono Cross into a good game if they are going the remake route, they basically have to remake the game from ground up, remove all the nonsensical things like the bajillion useless party members, the super weird in a bad way battle system which is also slow as hell, scrap the dialogue, rewrite it without the terrible accents and make it a completely different game than the original.

So we actually get something that is not Chrono Cross at all. Huh. They should just call it Chrono Break (or whatever it was rumored to be called) and make it the third entry everyone is dying for.

Chrono Cross is weirdly the kind of game that they could remake without infuriating the fans of the original. Just write in that this is some kind of alternate timeline/universe and voila.

Wasn't CT already ported to mobile and PC? Guess people are forgetting about that.

There was, it was poorly received but it's gotten patched significantly. IDK enough about it to know what people want from a pixel remaster that wouldn't be gained from cleaning up that version.

A 3D remake of Chrono Trigger has no chance of being good unless we can get some Arc Systems Works level graphical fidelity onto something like the Dragon Quest XI engine. Anything less and you might as well just play the original, which is still near the pinnacle of 2D sprites/top-down JRPGs

Something I can't get out of my head is that I don't think any 3D game could properly replicate Trigger's battle transitions. Those things are fucking FLAWLESS. The speed at which you get into battle as the characters reorient themselves on the same map is perfect. You can't improve it, only change it, and changing it affects the whole game's pacing (which is also excellent).

There's a few recent RPGs that come to mind here. Persona 5's are slick as hell but they're slower and less immersive. FF7R is really good at it, particularly going from cutscenes to gameplay. 7R can't do this constantly like CT though. I think the recent Yakuza games take place on the same map but normal battles aren't quite as dramatic and seamless? Not sure. So a lot of modern games are close on individual elements, but man. Hard to top Trigger on this.

Having typed all this out it seems like a really stupid thing to fixate on but I really think it illustrates how important even minor things are to the game and how little faith I have in the ability to replicate it. Part of why I have a soft spot for Cross is that it doesn't even try.

I Am Setsuna had 3D models with Chrono Trigger's battle system. I think it could work with that kind of graphical style.

Basically, you have a real-time system (think baby's first Ys game), and after softening up the enemies a bit you press a button to swap to a standard turn-based system. Once you do, everyone's starting positions are exactly where they were when you hit that button.

I mean there's sort of a selection bias here where Chrono Cross fans are already, by the fact that they are Chrono Cross fans, "people who are okay with a game that is wildly different from the previous entry in the series"

I'd consider it if it turns out to be a good entry point but my understanding of the series is that isn't how it works.
