Larry Butz - He might be the most inconsistently written character in the series. In the first game, he's presented as a spaz and a troublemaker but a dude who's generally a good guy deep down (think of him standing up for Phoenix in the class trial despite being the one who stole the lunch money). In every other appearance, virtually nobody likes him, not even Phoenix or Edgeworth, and he doesn't have a lot of likable qualities. They also can't make up their mind about whether he wants to be an artist or not. That being said, I still rate him highly because he's contributed to a lot of great moments in his appearances.

Gourd Lake - If there was a low point in 1-4, it's this place. It's ugly and lifeless, and it's kind of annoying to navigate, which was a problem at times in the first game in general. I'm not sure if I should include E2-1 here since it does technically take place there, but your area of investigation is super limited.

It is cool, but they also don't make any sort of deal about it, which does feel like a missed opportunity. They just mention it in the intro to the case, and that's it. I don't think Edgeworth makes any sort of reference to it or what happened to him there.

Yeah I guess that's why I forgot it happens at Gourd Lake.

Actually, it now occurs to me that every single case in AAI2 contains a really direct, unmistakable allusion to 1-4; Gourd Lake in E2-1, Gumshoe's 'three secret weapons' in E2-2, literally everything about E2-3, Lotta in E2-4, and Gourdy in E2-5. I wonder if that was intentional, or if they just really, really like pulling references from 1-4 (much like they also do with 1-3).

1-3, 1-4, and 1-5 get lots of references throughout the newer games, yeah.

In AAI2, it's probably at least partially intentional since it deals with Edgeworth and his father.

Acro - This guy is the main reason I can't hate 2-3. Yeah, you can argue his plan was stupid and would never have really worked, but the game really made me sympathize with him because he was a guy who reached the end of his rope (poor phrasing? The Ringmaster was the one at the end of the rope LOLOLO) and lost everything he cared about while Regina just laughed it off like it was no big deal. True Pain is one of my favorite Reminiscence themes, and him weeping on the stand as he confesses is a powerful moment. I really love that he resists calling himself a victim and says he's just a murderer.

Raymond Shields - I really like what he brings to AAI2, operating as the bridge between Edgeworth and his father. I'm glad they let him have the last word right before Gustavia's breakdown in E2-3 because he deserved to deliver the coup de grace there. Also, his past self's gimmick of eating paper to digest the information is great, and he has an excellent theme. One of the best songs in the game, for sure.

Quercus Alba - HUBJECTION! I didn't realize this dude was the big bad for most of the case, although if they'd kept his Japanese name, it might have been a bit more obvious since it's CARNAGE ONRED (no, seriously). I do like the idea of a marathon boss, but AAI1 did it wrong because the climax of the game is capturing Calisto Yew, not the ringleader. As such, the player tends to feel burnt out by the time you reach the end of E1-5 because you hit your emotional high hours before.

It doesn't always happen immediately. Definitly had times where I had a moment of thinking I got it wrong for the music to stop a little after saying "TAKE THAT"

Valant Gramarye - A petite prestidigitation. A modicum of magic from me to you. He's probably the best original character in Apollo Justice. I love his animations and his alliterative speech pattern. Plus, I was convinced he was Magnifi's murderer the whole time, so the fact that it turned out to be suicide was perhaps the most surprising twist of that game.

Remote Island Syndrome - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is my favorite anime, and so I love that they did a Phoenix Wright parody at the end of this particular story. You have Haruhi as Phoenix, Koizumi as Edgeworth, and Kyon as Mia acting out their respective animations, and you even have speed lines at one point!

Olivia Aldente - The constant gyration is hypnotizing. I can't look away. The fact that she's constantly trying to chop a fish or an eel that only gets larger throughout the trial is appropriately absurd. It's kind of nice to have a culprit who isn't guilty of murder for once. I like her breakdown, too.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Live-Action Movie) - I actually kind of liked it. All things considered, I thought they did a decent job with the costumes and hairstyles. They breeze through the first three cases and focus primarily on 1-4, which was probably the right decision considering the time restraint, and I thought they handled it fairly well. I don't know what in the heck they did with Redd White though.

Daryan's Hair - I get that they were going for a shark aesthetic and they wanted a giant pompadour as a tribute to classic rock and roll, but I think they took it a bit too far. In a series full of ridiculously unrealistic hairstyles, this one might take the cake.

Ryuichi Naruhodo - So, what, am I ranking Phoenix's Japanese name? I'm not really the person to do that since I don't know Japanese! I just know his last name is very similar to the word that means, "I see," so I'm sure there were a lot of "I see, Mr. I See" puns in the original. As such, it makes sense to go with Wright in English so you can achieve a similar effect with, "Is that right, Mr. Wright?"

Lamiroir - Honestly, the more I replay Apollo Justice, the less I like Lamiroir. This is the worst version of the "Slave to PR" trope. She's willing to let Machi get convicted for a crime she knows he didn't commit simply because she doesn't think she's allowed to reveal the secret to a magic trick during her concert. Perhaps the worst part is that no one calls her out for how stupid this is (much like every other stupid part of 4-3), and she's generally viewed as a character that the other characters like.

Turnabout Serenade (4-3) - There is literally no part of this murder Machi Tobaye was capable of committing except for escaping through the vent in the ceiling, and the fact that Apollo is incapable of pointing this out at any point frustrates me to no end. My only guess is that everyone in the world knows Machi has superhuman strength and the game just failed to inform the player.
