Is there such a thing as an unskilled job?

Are wal*mart greeters skilled workers?

I was a walmart greeter in high school.

Talking to people is a skill. They didn't let you just stand there. You also have to provide directions to certain items in the store which requires some knowledge and ability to communicate that knowledge to an old person.

Also most of the greeters are also cashiers which I think most would argue requires some skill.

How many years of training did it take to give directions around a walmart

A job that anyone with a functioning brain can do is unskilled. Yes, a Walmart greeter is an unskilled position, but not to say some will be worse or better at it.

I think people are equating unskilled with undignified or easy, which isnt true

But it completely devalues the concept of a skill to call literally anything past fogging a mirror a "skill"

No.

Even your standard retail job requires some degree of skill, whether that be time management, organization, multitasking, customer service, etc.,

"Unskilled labor" is just a term used against poor people to justify paying them shit wages. You'd be surprised at how many highly paid corporate executives there are that don't know how to operate a modern POS system.

Unskilled labor doesn't mean the job requires no skill. It means the job has a low level of required credentials.

Yes unskilled jobs exist, but typically that term is also over used by corporations that want to argue they don't need to pay you more money.

It's one of those terms that is technically correct, but kind of BS like student athlete.

If someone can be worse at something then there is a skill to being good at it.

Everything is a skill tbh, regardless of how easy it is. You could make an argument for 'basic functions' to be an umbrella term for these kind of skills I guess.

I used to get paid to just sit in a gym in an apartment complex and ask people to sign in as they came in. I think I was there as a deterrent from stealing equipment. It would've been cheaper just to replace stuff than pay me probably.

I did nothing for hours on end. It was fully unskilled.

An "unskilled" job would be one where you can pretty much go in and start doing it without any prior training or experience beyond what they give you on-the-job.

Perhaps "no prior skills required" would be a more PC way to put it, but that's also a mouthful to say.

Your pay isn't determined by any measure of "skill", other than how easily you're replaced by someone else of similar "skill".

How much time spent on training defines your line of skilled and unskilled? If it's on the timeline of years there's not very many jobs that can be called skilled.

And again, do you not consider communication skills to be a skill?

not really a time spent on training, but is it something that anyone walking through the door can do?

like, "communication" in this instance is answering a question. the customers are just as "skilled" if they can ask the question, it's basic human existence. customers find shit in the store on their own all the time, so giving directions isn't a skill either.
