He moved away from New Donk City and ended up in Mushroom Kingdom where he did a shit ton of stuff, but there's no hard measure of time for how long that took. Meanwhile Cranky could have already been an older gorilla during the original DK arcade game, and just aged up another 10ish years, since DK Jr. presumably became modern DK. (Gorillas are fully grown around age 15). 10 years seems pretty appropriate for Pauline to get into politics. So I assume that's prob what happened.
