Game had a weirdly bleak and depressing atmosphere considering its predecessor. It's like Banjo Kazooie is a Disney movie and Tooie is the gritty, fucked up fairy tale that it's based on. >_>

There's a lot to like about Tooie but yeah, it really was too big.

never got past the 1st world of BT but i enjoyed it quite a bit. Wish i could finish it.

I own a mint condition '64 system and have been trying to buy a copy of BK and BT for $50 combined, but thats proving to be tough -- people want 30-50 PER cart.

It was really same dev team at Rare that made DKC1 and DKC2. They kinda did the same thing there too, DKC2 is a lot more drab and bleak than DKC1.

What I like about Banjo-Tooie is how a main character from the previous game is just MURDERED right from the opening cutscene.

I mean they're collectathons it's in their nature to collect.

One of the biggest problems with banjo tooie was despite having much bigger worlds, they cut back on the collectibles. We went from having 100 single notes to having 16 5-count notes plus 1 20-count note. This was massively ridiculous that the game developers forgot the purpose of their own game mechanic. Notes serve more than just the way to access new areas but also worked as a breadcrumb trail, which would naturally lead you to areas of interest without getting the player lost.

But yeah the world's were still too big even if they doubled the note count.

For the longest time I never knew it was a sequel to something and was super confused as to why it was called "Banjo-Tooie" when the character was named Kazooie in-game.

Also, the bad guys that pretended to be helpless Jinjo always scarred me when I was a kid :(

shouldn't it be twoie anyway? but that looks weird and might confuse people, so maybe their naming convention is actually just stupid and not clever like they thought.

It was a very good game, but had plenty of problems. The framerate wasn't exactly great; the levels tried too damn hard to be "clever", instead of fun, with too much complexity in places; the moveset for the main characters was needlessly expanded, which was just stupid; they obviously wanted to make it somewhere between BK and DK64, with all the mini-games, which didn't really suit the game; they put a boss and a transformation in every world, which the fans had whined about getting for a while, but I think made the game worse; the characters being able to split apart was cool in theory, but basically pointless in practice; the hub world was not that interesting.

BK is just incredible, but BT is only very good. Certainly not a bad game, of course. Conker's Bad Fur Day was pretty average, however.
