I prefer his subversive slacker style more than Mike's innocent gee whiz personality. The bots and mads are often smarter than Mike. That was rarely the case with Joel. I don't think I've watched enough Joel episodes to really say, but I'd probably go with Mike from the episodes I have watched.

I was introduced to the series by the movie when I was a kid, in which Mike was the host, and in general I find the Mike episodes (especially the ones from The Brain That Wouldn't Die to Laserblast, which still featured Trace Beaulieu as Crow) to be the most entertaining.
