... It always barely misses the Earth? And the ones that usually makes it onto the Earth crashes someplace where there aren't alot of people, if any? Either we're lucky ass fuck, or hitting that bullseye is as hard as winning the Mega Lottery.

Our atmosphere protects us from a lot of asteroids and other smaller space debris. Most of that stuff will burn up before reaching us.

As for things that DO hit us, you have to remember that the majority of our planet is water or uninhabited land even if it does not seem like it. It's just more likely to hit that than somewhere that's populated.

In terms of asteroid collisions "barely" missing us is essentially a million miles away.

  1. Jupiter and Saturn suck up most of them.
  2. The ones that they don't get tend to hit the moon. They are pulled into alignment with the orbit by the Sun's gravity.
  3. Any that get past the moon tend to burn up in the atmosphere.
  4. In the event that we do get a collision it's basically identical in destruction to a nuclear bomb.
Anyway don't worry about it too much. It's essentially throwing a rock in the air and trying to hit it with another thrown rock while blindfolded. It's such an improbable circumstance that it's basically never gonna happen. Humanity will find a different way to kill itself first.

What's fascinating to me is that we'd probably still be living in a dinosaur utopia if not for that meteor several millions of years ago. Humans would have never evolved if not for that.

I'm pretty sure that's a Jimmy Wang Yu film.

Yep. That event utterly altered the history of life on earth. Its weird to think about. We only exist because it happened. I often wonder if the dinosaurs would have evolved to be intelligent eventually

Maybe, maybe not. Human level of sentience evolved through culture, tools, and language. If there was a dinosaur species that survived on something like that, I guess it could be possible.

Hitting that bullseye is WAY harder than any lottery. Space is a lot bigger than you think.

Define "intelligent", because some groups of dinosaurs are assumed to have been around as intelligent as chimps or dolphins IIRC.

I mean if one randomly hits in the Pacific Ocean or blows up above it chances are no one will see it. You see a bunch from Russia because Russia is fucking massive so it has the best chance of getting hit.

To the level of having a stone age tribal society or better. With language and tool use
