break it off because even though the relationship isn't all you want you've still known the person for years prior to getting together and when you break it off not only is the relationship finished but also your friendship

Asking for a friend

Honestly the worst part of it is the disappointment.

He was very excited at the start of everything but it just didn't go at all how he imagined

Or maybe the relationship is fine and my friend can't accept being happy and can't square the fact that this real relationship between two real people isn't living up to some perfect fantasy he dreamed up

It sounds like before your friend breaks anything off he needs to take a serious step back and re-evaluate his own expectations. There is a fine line between just not clicking with someone and having such an unrealistic view of what a relationship should be that you'll never be happy with anyone.

He should make sure he has a handle on the latter before he determines it is the former. Otherwise he'll get into another relationship and just into the exact same issue.

There's times where my friend thinks he's an adult and then someone drops some great advice like this and it reminds him how much more he still has to grow
