Nah I got past any of that years before he died

Then I stopped thinking about him

Then he died and I was pretty much like "huh" and then I stopped thinking about him until right now

Me and my dad have never been super close and honestly probably never will be. I dont have a problem with it Ive just accepted thats how things are.

I think Ive given my dad a hug like twice in my life and it wasnt until I was an adult that I realized thats not normal.

Acting sus there TC
My father sent my mother to the hospital twice.

Once with a broken jaw. She had her jaw wired for weeks.

Once after pushing her through a full length window. Its only thanks to the miracles of semi-modern medicine shes alive now. Is that sus?

Hed beat her on the semi-regular until I was old enough to be scary, apparently. He was my *dad* though. Is that sus?

One night, one of his violent turns was so bad my mum took me and stayed with a family friend overnight. We got home and hed let one of the dogs out and the cats didnt come back for days. I still have a strong negative association with a certain brand of beer. Is that sus?

Is it sus to object to my mother being given panda eyes that lasted weeks @inTaCtfuL ?

Otherwise he acted the loving provider. He tried to be a strong male role model and quite frankly? He failed. He never knew I wasnt a rampaging heterosexual, as he put it. Is that sus?

I wasnt good at baseball as a kid. I wasnt good at footy [shitty childhood experiences removed]. He then tried to train me as a boxer, and he trained me well. He was a semi-pro in his younger years. One of his wins paid for my parents wedding.

He had a gambling addiction that left him and my mum horrifically in debt (think hundreds of thousands). Sus yet?

Despite all that; he actually honestly tried his hardest to be a good male role model. I still have the balsawood plane we built together when I was 5. I have amazing memories of trying it out together. Is that fucking sus enough for you?

Or when he found out I loved science. He bought me an amazing chemistry set and a really powerful light microscope. Sus?

Or, after one of his many gambling sprees he bought me Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (still one of my favourite games) sus?

I brought my first girlfriend home, but not my first boyfriend, because apparently AIDS is everyones problem because of bisexuals. Is that sus enough?

We used to play GoldenEye together, and Perfect Dark. No odd job or the alien, of course. Even in the time of the Wii, he would still ask if I wanted to play GoldenEye. Sus?

Our relationship permanently soured (and I wouldnt be surprised if he went to his little vase hating me) when crashed at their place and he thought I was asleep and decided to suckerpunch my mum in the back of the head for disagreeing with him for something stupid. I heard her cry of pain and came racing down and confronted him.

He didnt like me quoting his own (quite hypocritical words back to him) and swung at me. His words were [in a sanitised format] Any man who hits a woman is a fucking [Deadwood word]. Watch the show.

It gives me no pleasure to announce that yes, a man in his early 20s is able to beat the shit out of a man in his 50s.

He never hit my mum again though.

He died of cancer a few years later. Sus?

When you think about all the negatives of someone its easy to judge, but human beings are complex creatures. I still remember the good times, the really nice times that cause a cognitive dissonance with the bad. Is that sus?

It was only after he died I received more context.

His mother was Stolen Generation [look it up], taken to work as a scullery maid at 10, his father was an orphan. His father once threatened him with a loaded pistol when he wouldnt eat broad beans as a kid (and he had a morbid fear of them the rest of his life). Yes, thats fucking sus.

Postscript: I have been happily married for 7 years and have never hit my wife once.

Tl,dr: think before you post.
