I think it says a lot about me given what I think of this. This was STS 61b and youre seeing the ACCESS half of the EASE/ACCESS experiment that was meant to test orbital construction techniques.

First off, its awesome to actually see even a simple structure actually be built in space rather than just delivered there.

But then they go buck wild and take it out of the cargo bay to twirl the big thing (its 45 feet long and a couple hundred pounds) around with their hands.

Its amazing and this is what really made me fall in love with the Space Shuttle. Flags and boots on the Moon and Mars are overrated.

Give me this any day.

Incidentally the post flight presentations are awesome to watch in of themselves. Most people dont really know the full scope of what the Shuttles were doing up there and only know the most flashy parts when you end up missing the really cool shit that doesnt make the news.

Fun Fact: When Astronauts traveled to the moon, they brought along itemized to-do lists strapped to their wrists. On the 1969 Apollo 12 mission, the people who prepared the notebooks decorated them with cartoons and porn copied from Playboy.
One of the astronauts later told a Playboy reporter that they didn't notice the photos until they were actually walking on the moon.
NASA still hosts the old-school pornographic images on it's website, an act of historical honesty which I think the space agency deserves credit for.
