The hardest part of the game the first time you play is figuring out how to make a decent build

If you give a noob player going in blind advice on how to make a good build it trivializes most of the game. It doesn't require complex strategy or fast reflexes like people online pretend

Give a new player good build advice and the hardest part will be not getting lost.

And I say this while loving the game.

Yeah like if you can beat Mike Tyson's punch out then dark souls should be easy by comparison. It's the same general skill set required.

Once you learn the mechanics, such as you can't just mash buttons, it's becomes very fun.

You really only need to understand the stats and basic mechanics

the lack of hand holding/minimap/compass gave the first set of casual critics the idea that a souls game is hard

Woolie and Pat from best friends proved this / are proving this

Pat coached his gf Paige in bloodborne and she made it look fairly trivial despite being really bad with the mechanics because he made her a really good build

Woolie is currently doing the same with Reggie who is at OandS with a build that's stronger than any new player would make even by the end of the game probably.

You can give them a build and they'll still eat dirt if they don't learn the timing. It's not like you have to be fighting game-good, but it's still the de facto "hard game" of that general field of genre.

I find that certain players want to reject all build advice despite knowing nothing of the games RPG elements. Like they know better than people who have run builds for years across several games and platforms.

That can be reasonable, depending on the context. Like, anyone giving advice to someone not asking is usually just being annoying.

In a way, that's like saying a puzzle game is easy if you give most of the answers. Part of it is definitely getting someone into the mindset of how to play, but imparting cheese strats/"abusing" game imbalance in itself shows the game difficulty is rather high.

The games are challenging but fair.

They aren't super impossible hard but they're harder than most games by a mile.

You can cheese most enemies, but they don't play by the rules anyway. Large enemies with armor carry huge axes and spears yet move insanely fast and swing those weapons like they're holding butter knives. But you move slow and struggle with every swing.

I understand, but then you see someone legit build a glass cannon. No damage stat at the soft cap (but all are so close!) and their HP is so low they're taken out in 2 hits.

Then they bitch about the controls not allowing their character to move properly getting them killed - not their bad build being unable to take a series of hits.

Oh that's totally on them. Dark Souls controls are part of what make it great.
