but not really

i could see someone making the case that throughout the film Leo calls Tom Hanks just to shoot the shit with him every Christmas and try to cope with his loneliness of not being able to just be himself

but it isnt that big of a part of the movies theme, at least I dont think so. Just a narrative tool to mark the passage of time in the story and give things a comforting storytelling loop. A pattern that viewers can feel good about recognizing.
