For reference, I've played all of FF6 and thought it was pretty boring. Chrono Trigger had some cool ideas outside of battles but it's actual battle system is also pretty basic.

SMT and Octopath are both great because you're encouraged to really understand and exploit the turn systems to beat the toughest challenges. It makes them so engaging to play, and in Octopath's case can make up for some dim stories.

Octopath is an alt Bravely Default so I guess try BD2. It's easier to completely break but otherwise it hits the same gameplay beats.

im on the same boat. i only bought a switch for SMT and can't find anything else to play.

xenoblade 1 on the wii was very boring for me. the combat literally plays itself

Maniac. Yeah doing fresh runs of that (no New Game +) is pretty cheap.

Tales of Vesperia DE is my favorite game.

Same. I didnt get the switch specifically for SMT, but I recently played it and want something else now. I really wish they ported some of the 3ds SMT games and spin-offs to the switch. I went back to 3ds momentarily to play some.

FFX in terms of turn based.

XB Definitive edition and XB2 are so fantastic. They are auto attack RPG games. Story and characters are great and the gameplay is good.

That's literally the tutorial enemy.

But tbf it does have that problem where you just have a fuck ton of tutorials and it takes awhile to fully unlock what the combat has to offer. Once it does however, it gets very fast paced. Using pouch items also increase battle speed as you'll be able to charge your arts faster.

XB2 unfortunately has that "don't worry bro, it gets good after 5-10 hours and only keeps getting better!" problem.

The gameplay DOES get really great and satisfying imo. But the first 5 or 10 hours of the game (which took me 80ish hours to finish) is ridiculously boring. When you get a full party, with a variety of Blades to with and experiment with, it starts coming together.

The early game when you're waiting for auto attacks to kill enemies was pretty stupid imo, since the actual combat system is more about using weapon abilities, elemental special attacks, and chain attacks to set up into massive damage. Also weirdly addictive ability trees for each Blade.

I should also mention I'm not super into the waifu collection stuff

World of Final Fantasy is criminally underrated. It's a solid 40 hour game, doesn't wear out its welcome, and it's a good game all the way to the end.

You'll get more out of it if you're a Final Fantasy fan, but the references aren't spoilers or anything. And you might be turned off by the funko-looking designs, but I thought being able to play as a chibi little guy and meet chibified FF characters was cute as hell.

And the game looks fucking fantastic for a PS4 port. World of Final Fantasy looks better than the gen 4 Pokemon remakes.

World of Final Fantasy is fan-fucking-tastic. Some games feel like chores to get through, others feel like a reward every time you boot it up. WoFF was an absolute treat every time I played it.

For me the game just has really good combat mechanics. I don't even like most of the story and characters tbh.

Kind of like Octopath. The story and characters are ridiculously boring, but I still worked for the true ending in the end because I was really enjoying the gameplay after getting the secondary jobs. Definitely prefer XB2, but that's just a personal preference thing.

Another really good RPG is For the King, it's a game where you pick out a class, hop onto a procedurally generated world map and play through a campaign to save the world. Short to medium campaigns, incredibly customisable party members, couch co-op or online co-op for up to three players. I hesitate to say "roguelike" elements, you can wipe your party and lose the whole run but you have a pool of lives and you can get more during special encounters for example, but it's less about the story and more about the adventure.

I used to play this with my best friend until the sun came up, and we wouldn't even realise how long we'd been playing. 10/10 turn-based RPG experience, very wacky and fun.

Exactly why I quit the game. Only reason I still have it is because it was so expensive second hand for like a year and it was finally retail again from GameStop online.
