TLJ had a LOT of problems, but it also highlighted the bigger issues with the third film in retrospect.

Star Wars films are just too safe and formulaic. While there are a lot of things that I absolutely hated about TLJ (particularly related to how Holdo's absolutely awful leadership skills are somehow presented as progressive),

I think it would've worked in a "subversive" Star Wars trilogy. The problem is that the tonal narrative of the first and third movies are the polar opposite of TLJ, resulting in a trilogy that seems bizarrely at war with itself. If the first movie been "formulaic" and the next two subversive it also would've worked - the "old way of the Jedi/Seth is self-destructive and dogmatic" was a strong theme in KOTOR II and it worked great.

The third movie was absolute shite, though. And the fact that it went out of its way to "correct" a lot of the second film made it seem a lot more petty than it needed to be.

Maybe it'd work if he got to create it from the ground up, but TLJ was definitely not the right movie for him.

Yeah, TLJ had some interesting ideas for Star Wars but...it shouldn't have been TLJ. If they actually do greenlight a trilogy for Rian Johnson I'd like to see it.

Anybody could have made it but they needed to have an outline first.

One of the weirdest things ever is them making each movie with no plan for the next one. Like it's some Mickey Mouse operation.

It is pretty insane how one company can have such drastically different plans for giant movie franchises, the MCU is meticulously planned and far more successful

I just want Rian Johnson to make a new Knives Out movie every year.
