Before Disney purchased Star Wars there was not only the original 6 movies but a TON of books/games/etc that existed. When Disney took over these got regulated to the 'Legends' title. Technically they still happened/are canon/etc, but are in a 'different timeline'. Meanwhile the post-purchase stuff (including the sequel movies) is now the 'Disney Canon' timeline. So Rei is canon in the Disney timeline but doesn't even exist in Legends.
