I'm pretty hyped. I'm still shocked Boba Fett has his own show.

Oh shit, I forgot this was coming.

Mildly hyped for it. I don't give a shit about Star Wars but I liked Mando.

Oh shit that premieres tonight? I almost entirely forgot.

Meh.

Pretty boring.

Yeah this isn't really popping off is it.

For those wondering, the episode (and possibly the series) is split in time between Fett after having taken over Jabba's Palace (and crime syndicate) and the other half is flashbacks of Fett just after he escaped from the Sarlacc.

The inside of the Sarlacc is pretty gross and neat for what thirty seconds we got of it, before Fett grabbed an oxygen tube from a dead Stormie and then flamethrowed his way out. Fett then collapses after his escape and gets stripped by Jawas and captured by Tuskens. The rest of that time is basically spent earning the Tuskens' esteem by killing a dangerous predator for them. The predator kinda looks neat but is basically a cross between Goro, a lizard, and a centaur.

That's all interspersed with the "present" which is a relatively small amount of time with Fett and Shand speaking to Jabba's vassals, going into Mos Espa, and getting into a rather uninspired fight with some assassins. Like the first part of the fight has them penned in by energy shields and it's kinda dumb looking as they get poked at with electric clubs.

It's funny because the end of episode art (which always looks cool) has Fett and Shand with their blasters out, but in the actual episode they don't have their blasters because I guess they figured out in the process that the fight would be over in a minute if they could just shoot them, soooo they left their blasters behind I guess but they still have other hidden weapons, and it just all looks kind of awkward.

At least until Shand goes after a couple of stragglers of the assassins and she puts on her helmet so we can switch to the stuntpeople doing parkour over Mos Espa rooftops. That lasts about a minute though.

I mean, I like Ming-Na Wen just fine. She makes a great second to a charismatic lead (as in Agents of SHIELD), but here she's just the terse adjutant to a terse leader and it's just not all that interesting to have them interact, because Fett is not charismatic.

This show is going to need some interesting and likable characters. Mando was always playing off these larger than life goofballs like Greef Karga, the Client, and so on, and even his quiet interactions with Grogu were cute, but this is just crime people doing crime and when there's already so much crime on TV these days, having a show that's "Crime but Star Wars" needs a hook of some kind.

It needs its Baby Yoda, is what I'm saying, whatever form that takes.

This. She's the best thing on the show so far but Fett is bringing her down. The actor playing him seems a bit too old and doesn't come off as some uber-badass at all. I'd rather just watch an entire series based around Fennec, tbh. Team her with some charismatic smuggler type and we'd be all set!

Temuera Morrison is a great actor, but he was getting a bit long in the tooth 20 years ago. Now it's like, slow motion 1980's style action fights.

I mean, the show is kind of unnecessary, but I did end up enjoying it. Even though it seems like they're going the Arrow route, which got extremely annoying.

I think people are not gonna like this Fett. He was obviously different in Mandalorian and this is kind of exactly what I was expecting. A soft Fett trying to deal with taking Jabba and Fortuna's place. Fennec already sees that the softness is not gonna work.

I'm still on board simply because I assume this is where his character arc is leading, i.e. becoming a bad-ass again. We'll see, though.

Oh I'm on board no matter what. It's Star Wars, I consume it. And it's probably only one season anyway.

sad to say it just seems badly written, especially since it's written by the creator--so many things that make no sense and badly paced. Interesting that Rob Rodriguez directed, haven't seen him in a while

I read that much (all?) of this was filmed before Covid protocols were relaxed which probably plays into it

Its basically what I expected. No new ideas, too much fanservice just like the Mandalorian, and a really weak excuse for how he got out of the Sarlacc Pit

I actually started laughing at the absurdity of
this scene a few seconds in. It was literally like 20 seconds of them being surrounded, getting poked with (electrical) sticks, and annoyedly swatting them away.

I think The Mandalorian overall is this shows biggest issue. It just feels too similar. All the planets and stories that could be told in Star Wars and we're getting another Mandalorian dude wearing armor in a bunch of desert outpost cities trying to negotiate and being ambushed. Now with a plot that potentially won't be as interesting.

It's still early days but it's really hard to get excited. Doesn't help that I don't think Boba really needs to be anything more than an apathetic merc. We already have a show where we see one of those grow into being something more. I'm not really convinced that he needed to be anything more than a supporting character in The Mandalorian.

I wonder how the Obi-Wan show will be. Potentially yet another show in a similar setting. At least the lead should be quite a bit more charismatic there.

I kept waiting for the whole "Woah you wouldn't want to mess with this guy" moment and it never came.

A pretty odd decision. I know the arc of the show will be his struggle between being moral and keeping his power and maybe as well dealing with being a has-been but a first good, big impression would have made a bigger impact I think.

The characterization of Boba feels super bizarre (it's like he's never been a criminal before) and in general the whole "present day" segment is pretty weak.

It's weird how Jabba was the most powerful criminal in the galaxy and Boba's approach to assuming his mantle is just wandering around Tatooine trying to make friends. It feels like the stakes should be a lot higher.

The bit of Boba with the Tusken is fun but that's not going to be the main thrust of the show.

It is a bit weird. Wasn't it implied Jabba hired him basically all of the time? How is he not familiar with Tattooine by this point?

Boba Fett feels weird because it's been like 6 years since he escaped and met the Tuskens.

He's gonna come out Jedi/monk-like once he's done with the Tuskens. The show will probably end with him not getting a better handle, rather him realizing he's not meant for the crime lord life.

The call back to Leia by having him kill the goro thing via chain strangulation was a nice touch. But everything seems slow. The action, the plot. I felt like very little happened for a first episode of a new show.

I mean, I thought it was a pretty cool / decent episode. People just need to hate on shit I guess.

I want more crime lord Boba and less how he escaped flash back. Episode 1 was whatever but still interested to see where this goes

I dont know that starting slow is the problem so much as the direction theyre clearly trying to take this show

Don't really need the helmet off for Boba. If a Darth Vader series came out and Vader never took his helmet off im sure it could kick ass. Same here. Great first episode regardless

I thought it was decent. The flashback segment ended up getting more interesting as the episode went on at least, and between this show and The Mandalorian I love what they're doing with the Tusken Raiders.

I had no idea this already started.
