It's more like we were gifted as kids, which gave people the impression we were super smart when we were just better at learning the early stuff and that pressure and the feeling we let people down crushes us mentally and makes us feel like failures. Or at least that's how it is for me.

Im with you up to the pressure/letting people down part

Gifted programs give an unearned sense of intelligence, K-12 was easy to coast through with minimal work...

... then you get to college with terrible habits, no study skills, and probably a delay before you accept that some classes require actual effort

For me it wasnt really until after i graduated college that i really got my shit together and started college

This.

I do have several facebook friends who constantly share memes about what it's like to be a failure as an adult after being a former gifted kid growing up.

The problem is that these people are trying to take two different sets of standards and comparing them to each other.

Being a gifted kid simply meant you were at a math or reading level higher than your grade in school (a grade which is determined by your age, not by any sort of realistic mental capacity). One you are in high school, being gifted loses its value as you can be a 10th grader and be taking basic algebra or calculus depending on your skill level. There is no "expected" level of math, just what you tested into and what prerequisites you have. This also continues in college.

Outside of school, there are no math or reading tests. You get judged in society by your career, your wealth, your appearance, things that weren't as important when you were a child. Being good at math does not necessarily translate to these things. But a gifted child will hear "gifted" and assume they were better at most things than most people when that is just not necessarily true. Then they learn the truth as an adult and their world falls apart.

EDIT: Let me add to this that the issue comes with the term "gifted". If we just changed the term to "advanced placement" I think we wouldn't see this kind of problem pop up as often.

You realize everyone that says they were gifted as a child was in a dedicated gifted program? It's not just some arbitrary self appointed title (even if the evaluations for such programs were a bit arbitrary).

It doesn't in Elementary but K-12 still shares enough at the school board level and whatnot that having two programs with the same name would probably cause confusion.

Not like "shut down education" confusion but it's a problem that can be sidestepped entirely.

I wish I learned earlier in life that a Gifted diagnosis was more disability than blessing. I never learned to apply myself or study/do homework properly. And the follow up of dealing with crushing disappointment and failure later in life than is developmentally healthy.

No one's life goes as expected though so I don't subscribe to the 'Woe is me. I could have been something.' feelings.

My oldest daughter could be categorized as gifted, so I can draw on my experiences to help her out and avoid the pitfalls that I couldn't.

Anyone who thinks I was gifted as a child is wrong.

Reminds me that in first grade, I was constantly getting detentions, whether it be after school, in-school, out-of-school, and Saturday. The rest of elementary school was fine, with straight A's. That dropped off in high school, when I didn't apply myself as much as necessary, but whatever.

Then there are the kids whose parents encouraged them to believe they were gifted ... but who weren't, really. They were simply above-average performers at a very mediocre school -- big fish in a small pond. Then they changed schools, moved to a bigger pond, and the letdown was heartbreaking.

This is fairly common for smart kids, actually. I got college tours and some sort of scholarship-bond thing in third grade, as part of...some kind of program that sounds like Rogaine?

The thing is that they never learn to study until it's way too late.

I can kind of understand it. Was valedictorian of a 500+ senior class, 34 ACT, full ride to college. Probably didn't end up the way many people expected, let alone the way my 18 year old self expected it to go. But I wouldn't consider myself a failure, I've found happiness in my own way and I'm not ashamed of it.

US education being unable to teach kids how to study or apply themselves to schoolwork is a separate issue from gifted programs.
