I switched to Credit Karma two years ago. I forget why. TurboTax wanted to charge for some specific thing that I needed now but never needed before (can't even remember what it was), but Credit Karma did it for free.

Lame.

Actually, it looks like it's still free with Credit Karma. Although it's going to be called Cash App Taxes now. Weird. https://www.creditkarma.com/tax

Jesus, guys please go to a good tax guy that finds all the legal ways to reduce your income that ends up saving you on taxes.

The fee you pay them is worth it, trust me. Youre doing yourselves a disservice by doing it yourself for free.

  • Also, its not those tax services you see in plazas. They do the same shit you could do for free and charge you.

I thought they were required to offer the free tax filing service as a compromise to quash some program that'd have the government provide it?

Most people are just earning a wage from a job. Maybe they have a house. In terms of tax tricks, how many are there in such a simple case, really?

Still worth a shot to find out. So before I started working for commission in the timeshare industry, the first year I made a good income I got referred to a tax guy a lot of the sales reps use. So I go there, he did his thing and got me thousands back. Im single with no kids.

He also asked what I did the past three years. I told him I did turbo tax. He did a revision of the past three years and got me back $900 to $2000 back per year for the years he did the revisions.

He also signs off that he prepared the taxes as well; its not like hes doing shady shit and then nopes himself out of responsibility either.

I'm a tax CPA and I would advise most people here to just use TurboTax or something similar. Our minimum fee for a 1040 is like $750, and most of the ones we do are well over $1,000. If you just have a W-2, there's not much we can do to lower your taxable income.

Depends.

When my income was minimum wage, I could do that shit myself.

Now that I own a home, dabbled in day trading stocks a few months, paid off a few debts.....idk, I may pay someone this year. And only reason I'm considering it is because the idea of dealing with it sounds annoying.

I've also been using them and everything's been fine. I file state taxes with them as well and though it's not free, it's still cheap. Plus they handle investments (which is something at a higher tier for turbo tax).
