In the spring of 2017, rapper and producer Logic released 1-800-273-8255, a song featuring the phone number for the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

The music video that accompanies the song features a young, queer Black man grappling with discrimination and bullying. He considers suicide, but instead calls the Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Logic performed the song at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and at the 2018 Grammys.

A new study published in the medical journal The BMJ showed that around the time of each of those high-visibility events the award show performances and the release of the song and music video calls to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline increased.

In fact, the authors of the study found that Logics song may have saved an estimated 245 lives.

Logics song 1-800-273-8255 was associated with a noticeable increase in calls to Lifeline and a simultaneous small reduction in suicides during peak social media discourse about the song, they wrote. The latter outcome is worth underscoring the occurrence of a widely disseminated song and video was associated with more than 200 fewer suicides than expected.

that's great, if true.

obviously songs like that are few and far in between, but if they're helping people continue living, it's something to be appreciated.

Do you also have this energy with movies and video games? Or is it just the media you don't like that you think has influence in bad ways over people. Every form of media is gonna have reckless people who let it guide them in the wrong direction. And you can easily use a lot of media as scape goat whenever you feel like writing off the bigger picture. You got 666 in your name, is that from Metal music making you worship the devil and the evil behavior that comes with that territory? Let's protest!

Movies and games are not making diss tracks on the top of the graves of their dead enemies, buddy, lol. I don't think they're saying that graphic lyrics are to blame, it's the very real beef people have in the streets that get put to music

Seems to me they are trying to say that rap doesn't make you any more violent than violent video games and movies, which I believe to be true. However, you can't really compare the two when it comes to people getting killed because there are real life personal issues when it comes to some of these rap disses and song that have got people killed over the years

I 100% agree that rap doesn't make people violent. But some of the rappers out there want all the smoke

That's because people that are/were gang members choose to rap. Not because rappers choose to be killers. It's literally a way out of that life for the one's actually looking for a way out.

Tekashi os an example of a rapper tryong to do the reverse. And he ended up putting away real gang member's

And none of those diss tracks kill anyone either.

People's REACTION to those tracks, just like people's reaction to a video game or movie have caused violence and death.

It is STILL different, though. A movie or video game isn't going to rile you up with personal attacks
