They are small too. Mini schnauzers. They got into a box of chocolate with alcoholic filling left on a kitchen table. The male can jump almost like a cat up onto that table

He knocked it down and then they both ate the chocolate. I'm not there. But I talked to my parents on the phone. They have been throwing up for hours. Should the dogs go to an ER? I mentioned it myself, but they don't want to do it yet. What do you think?

Aw I have a mini schnauzer too

They can eat a certain amount, I think if they're 20lbs they can eat 100g of dark chocolate. Milk chocolate just makes them puke

Alcohol is take them to the vet

Called them again. My mom claims the throwing up is slowing down. I still think they should have been looked at by a vet. She says they are fine now

My parents are smart about some stuff but other things they can be not so much. And very stubborn. I can't believe they left the chocolates out. They know the dog can reach that table

I'll update if they die I guess......

I like those dogs so I hope they will be ok

People rush to the ER too often, if the dogs are improving they're probably fine. All the vet would do is pump their stomach and make them eat activated charcoal

My schnauzer has eaten a few pretty big dark chocolate bars and he just puked it all out and felt like crap for a day

The thing is the worst signs can take 6 to 12 hours to show up... if they puked it all out that's a good thing but its still a really fucking bad situation.

Depends on the kind of chocolate and weight. Dark chocolate is actually a lot more toxic to dogs than regular chocolate.

It can cause internal bleeding, seizures, and heart failure. But dying is apparently very rare.

Yeah, chocolate is highly poisonous to dog, but there's a certain amount they can eat and be OK. Everyone here is right for freaking out, but that the dogs are improving is a positive sign that they did not consume enough to kill themselves.

Make sure they are getting plenty of water because vomiting can lead to dehydration. Same w/alcohol.

The bigger the dog the more chocolate they can tolerate before it becomes severe. A schnauzer isn't that small but as long as it wasn't one of them eating the whole box it might be okay.

They don't know exactly how much was eaten. The box started with 75 pieces. It comes in like 3 trays I think. Each tray is 25. They think there was less than 50 but they are not sure by how much. Whatever was there, all got eaten

And yes it is dark chocolate. This sucks. It's 9 pm and I am like 5 miles from their house and no car. All I can do is try to talk to then. But last time I called my mom hung up on me cause I said "I can't believe you guys were so careless"

I sent a Facebook message to my dad. I have a sister there too. But she seems to agree with my parents. I'll mention the thing about long term effects though

And yes, they are drinking a lot of water

I mean something like .13 ounces per lb of bodyweight is considered toxic to dogs when its dark chocolate.

Its for sure a genuine concern. It sounds like maybe they puked it all out and will be ok.

Were you just really desperate to use the word gaslighting or something cause like.... that was weird and not proper use of the term either.

I enjoy people that are bending over backwards to wave away the danger of chocolate to dogs, and yet are completely ignoring the alcohol in the chocolate... which is even more poisonous to dogs.

I don't understand the aim here. Can they just not read, or are they trying to be contrarian? "Haha, I totally won the argument! A couple dogs might fucking die, but who gives a shit about them!?"

I never once acted like there isn't a huge risk. They should have gone to the vet. One thing the vet would do is induce vomiting.

So they might be okay. Excuse me for hoping for the best. Jesus.

Well, if what TC said is true, things look pretty grim for two small dogs. As stated earlier in the topic, chocolate is highly toxic to dogs.

Dark chocolate yet more so.

Alcohol exponentially so.

Is it 'chocolate' or is it Cocao 19293% authentic bitter stuff? Most chocolate sold doesnt bother dogs as much as the sugar will. If it's the bitter stuff, then they need to be seen.

The booze is probably whats making them barf, and dogs ability to barf so much is an evolutionary trait that theyre the best at. Like, seriously, its a weird thing if you think about.

There's also online vet visits you can do. I did it a couple of times for my dogs

That's objectively untrue.

Dogs can drink beer and if they have a huge amount they will get drunk and eventually go to sleep like any human.

They don't process alcohol as well as we do but its not as poisonous as chocolate and some liqueur in chocolates is an exacerbating factor I guess but its definitely not the major concern.
