Fission is the splitting of atoms, either by radioactive decay or by collisional impact. Certainly radioactive decay occurs because the sun contains many radioactive isotopes including thorium, uranium etc. Basically fission happens irrespective of any environmental constraints because it is an intrinsic property of radioactive nuclides. You may find some success smacking lithium atoms together. Right. You want one reaction to fuel the other and contain the brunt of the energy that isn't been siphoned. Worst case scenario? You have to change out the casing every once in awhile. The absurd stability of the alpha particle constrains everything else. There is no stable isotope at mass numbers 5 or 8, and everything past 62 is theoretically susceptible to alpha decay. Bismuth only became "unstable" in 2012, and its half-life is so absurdly long that it's irrelevant. Probably two bismuth atoms on earth decayed to thallium today. ... Copied to Clipboard!
