Early 2000s? Late 2000s? Right now?

Personally, I look back rather fondly on 2008-2012. YouTube wasn't nearly as commercial, and algorithms hadn't infested social media yet. It all still had that simple, down-to-earth vibe.

I agree. If you had access to a T1 connection you could download MP3s, porn, console game emulations, and other warez by simply going to your average search engine or through Usenet. Corporations were not quite Internet savvy yet so copyrighted material was in plain sight or still freely available if you knew where to look.

I consider the end of the line when ISPs stopped hosting free Usenet servers with access to the binaries newsgroups.

Before Twitter became mainstream.

It was more fun when it was semi popular but still on the niche side. Now that literally everybody is on the web it kind of sucks.

I miss when old people didnt know how to use the internet.

1995 till 2005 = The Golden Age.

Why 1995 as the starting point? A few reasons:

1) Explaining what the hell the internet was became mainstream during 1995 when channels like MTV and ABC and others started explaining there is this thing called the internet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NIPGmziNG0

2) AOL (America Online) started advertising on major channels during 1995. This is one of their commercials on TNT during 1995:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1npzZu83AfU

3) Xband (while introduced during November 1994, it starts to truly ripple by 1995. It remained permanently niche, but it became the first significant ONLINE multiplayer network for gamers with a Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo during 1995. It even had X-mail, which was their version of e-mail).

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/5/1/AAMsTmAACxHL.jpg

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/5/2/AAMsTmAACxHM.jpg

4) During 1995, EGM (Electronics Gaming Monthly - one of the top video game magazines) started telling people about their new website called NUKE (which becomes a success by 1995 internet standards):

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/5/3/AAMsTmAACxHN.jpg

5) The success of Nuke would lead to other video game websites showing up.
One of them would be a website known as the Video Game FAQ Archive during November 1995:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/8/4/AAcOiaAABlKw.jpg

and then...
During September 1996...
The website would be renamed as...
GameFAQS (and it's still around during 2022...you are on that website right now!!)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/5/5/AAMsTmAACxHP.jpg

The Golden Age of the internet began during 1995 and would end by the end of 2005.
2006 is the beginning of the Silver age of the internet. While Youtube was created during 2005, it would truly start to ripple beginning 2006 and that's the start of the Silver age, which ends around the year 2016.
2017 is the start of the DARK age of the internet when Twitter (which was created years earlier) begins to grow dark and INSANE in a very bad way and that insanity starts to slowly spread in a dangerous way to other websites...

2003-2008
This. I was let loose on the Internet at probably too young of an age, but I can't imagine growing up any other way and at any other time. I miss the days of fan sites, message boards, and just the general idea of the Internet being this vast world to explore. Now it really feels limited to just the huge social media platforms and it's not the same. Also, everyone is on the "Internet" now. It's not a place for dorks and nerds anymore.

Also, yes, I'm aware that I'm posting this on a message board. But this is a dying relic of a bygone era. GameFAQs when I first registered my account (at the tender age of 13 because I was a good little boy who followed the rules) was absolutely a bustling and robust site with extremely active boards. That kind of space basically doesn't exist anymore.

I imagine everyone is just going to say the time that they first used it in. So with that in mind, the golden age was totally 2005-2008.

This topic reminds me of a tweet I saw doing the rounds a while ago, of someone bemoaning the downfall of Youtube, and longing for the good old days of... 2019.

Late 2000s, early 2010s. Internet and computers were too slow on average in the early 2000s.

It became worse when forums died, bots became normalized, and social media began providing more extremist content.

Right now is still really great for certain things. It's still good for getting involved with smaller, specialized communities. *Certain information is also easily accessible compared to the past.

For me it was around 98-2000.

Chat rooms were kind of like the beta version of virtual reality in a way.
You could download game demos left and right which for me was similar to renting SNES games on the weekend, only this was free.
Everything was new and it hadn't hit the mainstream yet, so you could still have a bit of a niche hobby.
Multiplayer games were a hoot because the graphics didn't really matter at the time due to everything looking kinda shitty, game play was more important. Unreal Tournament was a blast.

On a 33K modem, photos loaded in chunks. It was an event to look at porn, lol. You had to get some mountain dew, wait for the rest of the house to fall asleep, stay up until 2 am watching whatever MTV happened to have on or some goofy movie on Sci fi channel, then save an entire image gallery to a floppy disk. Oh wait, it can only hold six jpegs? Better choose your favorite images, that's all you get for a week or two lol

I was watching porn in 4K VR the other day. Not just 4K, but 4K VR... it looks REAL. I've heard they have 8K VR porn now. I can only imagine how that looks considering how life like the 4K VR stuff is.
Anyway, during the late 90's (1998 - 1999) I discovered porn on the internet. I would find pics... that would load SLOWLY... freaking SLOWLY... Three minutes in you fully see the woman's head / face... then it SLOWLY starts to load the rest of the pic... SLOWLY... very SLOWLY... that was freaking painful. It was like watching a slow as hell strip tease which takes forever. LOL.

This. I've heard a lot of people cite GamerGate as a specific turning point when things started getting really toxic. The Tropes vs Women in Gaming controversy pushed me away from internet culture for a while so I missed GamerGate but it makes sense looking back.

IIRC the early 2010s was also when platforms like reddit and Youtube started to really gain traction amd begin transforming into what they are now.

1995 - 2005 = Golden Age

2006 - 2016 = Silver Age

2017 - and continuing for the time being = Dark Age

That's what we have so far, three ages.

On a side note,
The internet was technically created during 1983 but it wasn't till 1995 when it started growing mainstream and started blossoming, so 1983 till 1994 is the prehistoric age.
So really FOUR ages for the internet.

mid 2000s. Back when things like Napster/Limewire were still a widely used thing and laws regarding internet sharing weren't as strict as they are today. Mainly because those applications introduced me to a whole slew of new artists and games that I wouldn't have known about prior.

Hell, being able to play SNES roms for the first time introduced me to games like Terranigma, 7th Saga, even Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past which weren't widely available in my small town.
