Outfitting a home gym:
  • Treadmill: $1000
  • Exercise Bike: $600
  • Elliptical: $1300
  • Rower: $1000
  • Adjustable Weights: $300
Say you want to cheap out and just buy the bike only, and the weights: $900. Planet Fitness has literally everything above, and costs $10/mo. That's 90 months, or 7.5 years before you come out ahead by buying it for home. Why wouldn't you just go to Planet Fitness?

So I don't have to waste time driving there, only to waste more time waiting to use the squat rack because 3 college bros decided to spend an hour posing for flexing-selfies between sets for the third time this week

All from Proform's website, and not even their most expensive ones in that category. For example, treadmill:

Exercise bike:

Elliptical:

Hell, a Peloton bike costs $2k and requires a $40/mo subscription:

And a Peloton treadmill costs $2800:

Why have a pool when a pool membership is infinitely cheaper logic.

I wouldn't do extensive exercise equipment or a membership. All you need is the outdoors, adjustable dumbells, a pullup bar, a bench, and your own body weight.

Well pools are relaxing and it's nice to be in your own private pool. Public pools are also always packed. I've been to Planet Fitness before, and it's never packed...

Agreed on not needing a treadmill, since you could literally just run outside. But those other exercise equipment is something you can't do readily outside (i.e., low impact cardio; you can bike outside too, but I'd say exercise bike > real bike, since they cost comparable).

uh... okay show me a treadmill that can do inclines and 10mph for under $500 please.

*EDIT*: Actually, you never claimed that. So do show me an adjustable set of weights for $70 and a bike/elliptical for $200, since that's what you claimed.

I typically run and simply walk or hike if needing low impact. Not like a bike is needed to be in shape, but I understand if someone prefers it.

Bench, dumbbells, power tower, kettlebell, and stationary bike at home, for me. Rotate use 6 days a week and saves a shit-ton of time. Wasnt all that expensive, either, but pretty much all of it was bought pre-pandemic.

Why would you need a bike, treadmill and an elliptical? Who really uses all three?

I have a planet fitness membership and it's true, you can't beat the price. But the downside is, it's extremely crowded. If I go anytime between 5pm and 10pm, the after work crowd ensures that I will have to wait to use every piece of equipment.

The solution, obviously, was to go after the crowds left, but doing that meant I was finishing up my workout at 11:30 pm or later. It's not a good trade-off when I wake up at 6am for work. Working out late like that is what got me started drinking energy drinks.

So yeah, if I had the space, I'd love to have a full home gym. It's far more convenient. I just wouldn't buy multiple cardio machines (why do you need a treadmill, bike and elliptical), which would cut costs by a lot.

If you have kids its more convenient. Planet fitness did not have a kids area last i checked. Also as mentioned before its more convenient as you dont have to wait for the 70 year old grandma who for some reason is trying to lift weights. With all that said i like the gym. For the eye candy.

You dont need gym quality equipment since it's just you. Gym equipment is meant for someone to run on like all day. Buy used if you can.

I got a used Golds Gym elliptical for $150
My row machine was like $200 and that was brand new.

Weights, you probably underestimated though. That's the cost of actual weights, but if youre going to do anything that needs a rack, then you have to factor that in too. A flimsy power cage/rack is at least $200 and that's an item that you'd actually want a nice one if you can.
