Simple question, simple answer.

I'm not consistent. Sometimes I do 1, sometimes I skip 1 and go to 2.

1 makes the most since. It's less navigational movements when starting up, which also means you can keep mashing the A button as soon as a title screen shows up because you know it will just select your file anyway. Slots 2 and 3 are better if you want to keep something around without risking selecting it.

I remember once when I was very young, during a family gathering some kid deleted & overwrote my big 101% save file because it was the one in the default slot 1, and ever since then a part of me always wants to avoid using slot 1.

I've had that experience.

Slot 1 unless Banjo's playing his Gameboy over on Slot 3

This is why I choose Slot 2.

Slot 1, except when I used to rent games as a kid since there was more of a chance the save might survive until the next rental.

why would i ever not use slot 1 if it's available

As a kid I often picked slot 2 and let my brother have slot 1 because I like the number 2. It used to be my favorite number.

Lately it is basically mental RNG that makes me select a file.

If it's my own game 1. If i'm borrowing a game then 3.

Slots 1 and 3, simultaneously.

Up until I was a teen I used to always pick the 3rd slot. Such is the life of the 3rd child.

since Gamecube era though I've clearly shot up as the most active gamer in the family and everything was just mine nobody else would be playing anyways. then the Wii was the first console that was bought for me specifically (launch-day line-up!)

heh I had the same thing going with the #3

like even though my sister (#2) clearly wasn't going to be playing games there'd always be the middle slot left blank

As the younger brother I usually picked slot 3. Slot 2 was our extra savefile if the game had a point of no return.
