The CW might get a new majorit owner after 15 years when co-buyers ViacomCBS and Warner Brothers are considering selling their majority stake after years of low profitability and a move to streaming services which is where the networks seem to want to go. Sources caution that this is still in the early stages and nothing is imminent yet but Nexstar Media Group, which is the CW's largest affiliate group is the leading contender to take ownership....

This also comes just as WarnerMedia is being acquired by Discovery pending regulatory approval

CW Chairman, Mark Pedowitz confirmed the rumours with a memo to staff writing "As many of you are aware, over the past year or so, this transformative time in our industry has led to a series of business activity across media and content companies. Given that environment right now, ViacomCBS and Warner Bros are exploring strategic opportunities to optimize the value of their joint venture in The CW Network"

He warned it's too early to speculate what will happen but the CW, which caters to a young adult audience has defied expectations getting to 15 years many would have predicted would fold or move to cable early on. It's worked because of its unique set up. While the CW has never been profitable as a stand alone entity, it has created value for its studio parents providing US broadcast distribution for shows they can exploit internationally and on streaming such as Riverdale, All American, Gossip Girl, Walker, Dynasty and Jane the Virgin.

They would stil retain minority ownership and supply the network with its in house shows

Pedowitz touted for more original programming than ever with its saturday expansion but the future of its most popular shows such as it's DC properties is in doubt as it could move to HBO Max or Paramount+ should they sell off to Nexstar which is what most seem to think it is following with streaming being the future and a move away from broadcast..

I watch CW shows but I don't watch CW.

I watch CW shows on Netflix.

Netflix should just buy it.
