I quickly downloaded it thinking it was the actual persona 5 game, but it's a spin off?

It's a Musou game that takes place after Persona 5. I don't recommend playing it first if you have any interest in playing Persona 5, so just add it for now.

This. It's a sequel, not just a spin-off. It will spoil some story bits of 5 if you play it first. Fun game though.

I saw the p5 anime, is that good enough?

This. P5S is a pretty good game for what it is, despite being a bit on the short side, even if it's not quite as good as P5, or especially P5R. Despite being a real time action Musou / Warriors spinoff don't play it that way, because that'll get you killed quick and the game just is not meant to be played that way. Play it like you would a Persona game(Use advantageous elemental Persona skills to interrupt them and exploit enemy weaknesses to stun them for deadly follow up attacks) for the most part and it becomes way easier.

Eh. I guess, but P5 anime was kind of mediocre, so you probably won't be able to appreciate P5S's design and references as much if you didn't play the P5 game.

Never played a Persona game before. I picked this up and I'm having a good time with it. Lots of story and very little action, though, but I assume the balance shifts when you get really into it.

It's really good and someone doesn't really play like a Musou game despite also being a Musou game lol

Personally I really enjoyed it. Against normal mobs of enemies, outside of Merciless difficulty, they're pretty easy but do not underestimate them, especially if they can exploit your weaknesses.

Play it like you would Persona 5/Royal, especially against bosses.

It's a pretty fun game, but idk how much I would have enjoyed the story if I wasn't a P5 fan. Seeing characters I already liked in a more light hearted situation/ on vacation was a huge part of the appeal for me.
