Thinking that paying a person to use their property temporarily is akin to being "forced to work for them at the threat of homelessness" means you are not living in reality

Because they hoard property to rent out which drives up housing costs. You also have large corporations which have more capital than individual people buying up property at over market value to rent out.

I work as a maintenance contractor for a few different landlords, but I'm also a renter for my own apartment, so I see it from both sides. There's a lot of bad landlords, and there's a lot of bad tenants.

The difference is that IME, most landlords are bad, whether it be from genuine callousness or from being jaded. But so many are incapable of sympathizing with tenants because they generally don't live in the building they manage. Even if they do try and do the right things, they do it slowly and cheaply. They rarely want to go out of their way to improve QOL for tenants in the long run because it's far easier and more affordable to patch things up as they go along.

THAT SAID, a lot of this comes from the fact that yes, there's a ton of shitty tenants out there who make landlords' lives a living hell, which makes it hard to care about all the people living in a property as a whole. I've seen all sorts of horror stories which make me feel bad for the people who contract me.

Generally though, I'm still more inclined to side with renters as a rule because they're usually the ones genuinely suffering. Living without heat/losing property to flooding/having no hot water/etc... outweighs "Oh man, I have to make ANOTHER phone call and spend some money!"

Doesnt a landlord just have to pay property taxes while they get to collect whatever rental price they demand from a tenant through a contract? If the house isnt paid off I sort of get asking for enough to pay the mortgage and property taxes with a little to support yourself with too, but if the house is paid off youre just leeching off people. The poster that said they help an old couple during a snowstorm sounds like theyre asking for sympathy when they didnt even say how much they charge said old couple or how much theyre making off said old couple.

My landlord is pretty awesome though. His houses are paid off and he says he only does this as a means for a comfortable retirement. He only charges me $600 a month for a 3 bedroom house with a finished basement in good neighborhood in Kansas City. Every Christmas he takes $100 off the rent as a gift. Doesnt even charge a pet fee either. While neighboring landlords are charging $1200-1500 for rent.

I think we, landlords do an extraordinary job - I myself almost selflessly house 10 families, thanks to a small loan from my parents - I managed to get a few properties by the age of 30, and have just built up from there.

However, really I am a bit annoyed that tipping isn't acceptable for landlords, yet it's intrinsic in most other service industries everywhere else in America.

Maybe its too expensive due to artificial scarcity created by people owning more than one home. Surely couldnt be anything like that.

My uncle started out in the 1970's making 2.35 per hour. His rent was $250 per month. His entire paychecks after taxes barely covered his rent and that's if he got a full 40 hours. It did not cover food, electricity, water, garbage or phone. There was no free Obama phones, there was no free Healthcare, there was no internet. If you wanted a job, you had to get up and go find one. There was no applying for it online because there was no online. If you were a man, you could not get food stamps or any assistance. You just couldn't.

For example in the Seattle area minimum wage is right around 17 an hour. If you work 40 hours a week, you easily make 600.00 a week. There are tons of apartments in that area for 1100.00 per month. So not only will minimum wage afford an apartment, you can also afford food and utilities. You can also get free phone, Healthcare and government assistance.

The ending of the first post is funny.

But the fact is, the way landlording works makes no sense for just about any other product when landlording doesn't inherently offer any sort of service. The service that home management companies offer can easily be offered to the actual owner of the home without the landlord middleman.

It doesn't make sense to take out a car loan, make someone else pay for that amount or more, then have the car afterwards. Same with books, dumbbells, games, humidifiers, or whatever good or trinket.

There is no tangible benefit for the tenant to rent when prices are high (at mortgage level or higher) and no specific service provided that can't directly be provided to the tenant directly without them.

The service is that as tenant you don't have to do any repairs/yard work/ shoveling. It is a landlords obligation to either do all that stuff themselves or pay someone to do it. And yeah rent might be around the same as a mortgage, but you forget you would now be paying property tax in addition as well as home insurance and any utilities that would have been part of your rent. This on top of now having to deal with your own repairs/upkeep costs/yard work/etc. Owning a home is by far more expensive of the two, the difference being you can sell the home and hope to get more then you paid.

Huh? There are car rentals and car leases where you pay for temporary usage but never get title. There is rent, rent-to-own, and leases for lots of home goods.
