Because to make it work they defend the horrible stuff that the bad guy does. In place of just saying .. I like this racist and how he mistreats the female hero. Like Batman and Catwoman. This is a good use of that trope. They are on different sides, but they are never really trying to kill each other. But now it is like.. oh that guy who tried to kill/rape her is just misunderstood . --- To be a poor man is hard, but to be a poor race in a land of dollars is the very bottom of hardships. W.E.B.
