This video of it pretty damning. They deleted the clip off twitch, so here's a mirror of it on twitter.

TLDW: they were giving away the contents of the box to the viewers. Pulled a card worth $25,000. Said they would giveaway something else in return. After backlash said they would donate $20,000 to charity instead. But are now giving away the card out of all of the hate they got.

REALITY: They weren't going to give money to charity, and they aren't going to send to card to the viewer. They are saying they will, just so people forget about it, and then sell the card and keep the cash.
You can tell by how they actually look like clowns.

I will never understand the people who open these packs where they could potentially get a card worth tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, without using gloves.

how much are those packs, because just pulling out a card that's worth $25k is crazy to me

somebody should explain this to me because all i'm seeing is a gold-coloured card with a few fancy effects that was probably made for a few dollars

No idea about this in particular, but these streams generally feature people opening decades old packs of cards that themselves cost thousands or tens of thousand of dollars in the hopes of finding rare cards that exceed the cost of the packs.

That happens rarely, but from what I understand, when people were unboxing pokemon and other anime cards, a box of like 10 packs was around $80

Supply and demand is a helluva thing.

The value of something is not dictated by how much it costs to make, but rather its rarity and how high of a price the market is willing to pay for it.

This, like why promise to give them away, when you can potentially get something so valuable? People will still watch without that. Streamers record themselves doing gacha pulls all the time without having to promise the viewers anything.

Those would be just general unboxing streams. Those wouldn't feature cards worth more than like $100. For these where they're finding super rare cards worth thousands, the packs have to be out of print.

This is very much a walk in the park for the winner's lawyer. They better either give it up or pay up.

Even modern pokemon sets have cards in the $500-1000 value range.
There's a set from only 5 years ago that has a charizard that is in that range. Even upgraded that charizard is selling for $200-300.

Do they? I know they introduced the equivalent of SSR cards at some point, but I wouldn't imagine them accruing that much value that quickly. I guess if their overall numbers are in the quad or quint digits, it could make sense.

Oh, that ten thousand dragon from yugioh was also over $1000 from the day it came out. Had a rate of like 1 per like 64 cases where a case has 20 boxes and a box has like 20 packs. And because of some custom visual effects on that card, it doesn't even matter that it's bad, just that it's top shelf stuff for rare cards.

They won't be able to sell this card. There's only like 10 printed so it'll be super easy to track this one. Nobody will buy it in the trading card world after this.

Yep.
Burning Shadows Charizard goes for insane money.
Upgraded in the $150-300 range. PSA 10 goes for $2,000 and higher.
Average price I've seen is in the $1000 area.

25k seems like a lot for a Trevor Lawrence super rare card considering he's had a pretty bad rookie season and that's nearly as much as a PSA 10 Tom Brady or Justin Herbert card (30k) from what I can find.

10k would put it around a PSA 9 Kyler Murray.
