Well taken in that light you aren't owed anything than what you previously paid for. You got books, you weren't being assured of any further installments just because you already committed to what was made available.

If he's off lighting cigars with the money people paid for his previous works instead of writing more then that's his prerogative.

The only way it will ever be finished is if a team of lawyers figures out how to wrestle the story rights away from him. (Or pay off his estate.)

If he'd just come out and admit they won't ever get finished, I wouldn't have a problem with it. He keep saying he's working on them and has given a few time frames for Winds of Winter's release that have passed by.

He might be able to finish the current book, but there's like no chance he'll finish the next one if it's taking this long to get this one out.

He just needs to admit that he wrote himself into a corner and doesn't know how to fix it. He has too many characters doing too many things in too many places without any logical way to tie them all up. He did this to himself

In January 2016, Martin confirmed that he had not met an end-of-year deadline that he had established with his publisher for release of the book before the sixth season of the HBO show. He added that completion of the book was "months away still... if the writing goes well". Martin also revealed there had been a previous deadline of October 2015 that he had considered achievable in May 2015, and that in September 2015 he had still considered the end-of-year deadline achievable. He confirmed that some of the plot of the book might be revealed in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones but one of the showrunners, David Benioff, claimed that while certain key elements would be the same, the show would diverge from the book in many respects. In February 2016, Martin stated that he had dropped all his editing projects except for Wild Cards, and that he would not be writing any teleplays, screenplays, short stories, introductions or forewords before delivering The Winds of Winter.

In 2017, Martin believed that The Winds of Winter would be released that same year. All this constant speculating about how his death and his health all in the context of "I hope I get my media content!" and completely disregarding him as a person. He's clearly terrible at managing his writing, yadayada. But "waaah I want a book!" isn't justification for dehumanising someone into a story dispenser.

If you don't think the books will be finished, shut the fuck up and move on. If you really want them finished and hope it happens, stop insulting the guy in every conversation because he hasn't finished a book yet. If I was him I'd tell the fans to fuck off too. People tell him to shit or get off the pot, but it applies to the fans too. I'm not saying "be positive or don't talk about it", but like, the conversations around him are pretty disgusting.

Some of it is his fault. He keeps saying shit about when Winds of Winter will be done that turns out to be false. He builds up the expectations of people and lets them down by doing that.
