Xenoblade 1 isn't too weeby. Great story and characters. It touches on pretty much all of those themes.

Chrono Cross has a large cast, and while there are a few "joke" characters with no bearing on the main plot, the big thing about CC is that just about anyone relevant to the story is recruitable, and every single character has at least 1 (usually 2) sidequest focused only on them. You're obviously not getting as much of each character (and especially intercharacter interactions) as in Trigger, but Cross's cast still has a lot to say for itself. The large cast is cool, but it's not why I adore Cross.

I'm looking for a story about as serious as FFVII but without the campy element...and not as cheesy as something as lets say, Tales of Symphonia.

Something with meaning, a commentary and/or a message the developers intended. Maybe some metaphor or something but especially in dealing with:

@Veggeta_MAX is a huge fan of this game.

It's a shame about Xenoblade 2's presentation because when it gets serious it absolutely delves into serious topics like mental health, depression, the real consequences of war, racism, prostitution, etc. It's why I love the game so much and think it's ultimately stronger in some aspects than the first game. But it's got some really ass character design for some characters and first presents itself as a lighthearted, trope-filled anime-styled game. By Chapter 5 it starts feeling more like your typical Xeno-style flair.

A much better (and less negative) way to view it is that you have your core cast of "canon" party members in Chrono Cross, and everybody else is bonus content.

as someone that hasn't played CC before, what do you adore about it?

The thing about Chrono Cross is that people like to argue it as "This game has 45 characters but only like ten of them get any development!", as if your standard RPG cast doesn't usually only have about ten characters anyway.

A much better (and less negative) way to view it is that you have your core cast of "canon" party members in Chrono Cross, and everybody else is bonus content. The characters that matter to the story are used in the story -- everybody else, like Funguy, Skelly, Mojo, and NeoFio -- are just there for fun and in no way necessary to understand the plot of the game, because a lot of them are irrelevant by design.

It's always been weird to me that this is a complaint a lot of people have with Chrono Cross, but then they don't even bat an eye at Suikoden.
