He was, but his republican party was very different from the modern one. Republicans were considered liberal back then. Democrats were conservative. If Lincoln was around today he'd be a Democrat

Lincoln would be considered a virulent racist by todays standards.

Not tying to shit on the man, he was very important to a vital progressional period of this country, but he was far from historically flawless.

Oh yes.
Lincoln was by no means a civil-rights guy.
LBJ, who signed the Civil Rights Act wasn't either. It was all politics.

Carter, a plantation owner from Georgia, was somehow probably the least racist president there's ever been. That guy was far too good a person to have ever been president.

Lincoln was a man of his time. And I guess you could call his stance on slavery progressive for the time, but progressivism as we know it wasnt really a thing in the mid 1800s. He saw slavery as an unacceptable evil, but he definitely didnt see blacks and whites as equals. Which was probably a sentiment shared my many if not most white abolitionists of the time. Republicans of the time first and foremost had the interest of white, mostly northwesterner, industrialists as a priority.

Fredrick Douglas had a really good speech about Lincolns importance but flaws for a slavery abolition monument that should be required reading in all American history class curriculums in public schools.

Shouldn't Republicans stop repping Rebel colors then?

Why are they proud of slave owning Democrats?

Republicans have always been the "fuck you!" party. Eisenhower rode in on "fuck you!" being Hitler.
Reagan rode in on "fuck you!" being Carter.
Dubya rode in on "fuck you!" being Clinton.
Trump rode in on "fuck you!" being Obama.

It's arguable that Thomas Jefferson rode in on "fuck you!" being John Adams.

We all know this. Most of us just refuse to admit it.

What? Were you alive in the year 2000? Clinton was incredibly popular for a departing president. Comparing him to Carter is insane.

There is nothing wrong with it.

There is also nothing wrong with saying that back then the Republicans were liberals fighting for change and Democrats were the conservatives seeking to keep things the way they were.

Because at the time Republicans were more Liberal , against slavers, pro government spending and social programs

Democrats were the right wing small government at the time

They switched ideologues

So seeing someone waving a confederate flag while claiming to support the party of Lincoln is baffling

No. Back then they actually were the same party. There wasn't a schism until Andrew Jackson.

As for "when did the parties switch" it was a long gradual process that started in 1877.
